Presentation

The Department of Mathematics is an organic unit of ISCTE-IUL that aims at the creation, transmission and application of knowledge in the field of Mathematics. It is the department's objective to clearly and realistically promote the preponderant role of Mathematics in the development of Science and in the daily life, considering that it is essential to obtain solid knowledge that can be used in solving concrete problems, namely in the development of new technologies, both in a business context and in support of research.

The Department of Mathematics (DM) of ISCTE-IUL is integrated in the School of Technology and Architecture (ISTA), ensuring teaching and research activities, as well as dissemination and provision of services to the community. Some of its members are authors of scientific-pedagogical support books in Mathematics.

Inserted in one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in the country, the DM combines a wide experience in the teaching of Mathematics with scientific productivity recognized nationally and internationally. The teaching activity is transversal to most ISCTE-IUL departments and its faculty teaches a varied set of curricular units in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle courses.

The DM, together with IBS and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), is responsible for the Master in Financial Mathematics. Some professors collaborate in teaching in master's and doctoral programs of IBS and ISTA, namely Master in International Management, Master in Complexity Sciences (in collaboration with FCUL), Master in Management of Services and Technology, Doctor of Business Administration and PhD in Complexity Sciences (in collaboration with FCUL).

The teaching provided guarantees the fundamental formation in Mathematics and the contact with diverse computational tools suitable for the exploration of the programmatic contents (MatLab, Maple, Mathematica, SPSS, Stata, Eviews, among others). Appropriate are the approaches that allow students to develop abilities of abstraction, reasoning and critical thinking, necessary for solving problems.

DM members carry out their research activity in connection with several Portuguese and foreign research centers, participating in several projects funded by FCT and the European Community (COST). The scientific activity reflects interest in different areas of Mathematics and develops theoretically and with a strong application component in various fields such as Engineering, Management, Economics, Finance, Marketing and Natural Sciences.

The involvement of DM teachers in the orientation and coordination of master's and doctoral theses held at ISCTE-IUL and other universities, as well as participation in academic juries and refereeing in national and international magazines and conferences has been relevant.
