Este trabalho de investigação teve como principal objetivo realizar uma análise exploratória dos fatores determinantes da internacionalização das empresas portuguesas para os Países da Europa Central e Oriental (PECO). O interesse por este tema resultou do facto de se constatar uma significativa presença de empresas portuguesas num conjunto de mercados que, apesar da sua adesão recente à União Europeia (de que Portugal também é país membro), constituem mercados geograficamente distantes de Portugal, com poucas afinidades históricas e culturais e relativamente desconhecidos da oferta nacional de bens e serviços. Tendo por referência este enquadramento foram formuladas duas questões de investigação: Quais foram os fatores determinantes da internacionalização das empresas portuguesas, via investimento direto estrangeiro, para os Países da Europa Central Oriental? Que modos de entrada foram utilizados pelas empresas portuguesas nessa expansão internacional para os PECO e que razões levaram a essas escolhas? Para resposta a estas questões de investigação foi realizada uma revisão da literatura que incidiu sobre as principais teorias da internacionalização empresarial, contemplando quer as chamadas “teorias económicas”, quer as “teorias de base comportamental”, e também um enquadramento dos PECO como destinos de investimento direto estrangeiro, incluindo investimento direto português. De seguida, e ao nível da investigação empírica, foi adotada uma metodologia de múltiplos estudos de caso, tendo sido selecionadas cinco empresas industriais portuguesas com investimentos nos PECO que foram alvo de uma análise detalhada e cruzada do seu processo de internacionalização. Esta investigação é finalizada com a apresentação e a discussão das principais conclusões da análise dos estudos de caso, sendo também mencionados os contributos deste trabalho para as empresas e para a academia, as suas limitações, e também sugestões de pesquisas futuras.

This research had as main objective to do an exploratory study of the determinants of the internationalization of Portuguese companies for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs). The interest in this topic resulted from the fact that it exists a significant presence of Portuguese companies in a number of markets that, despite its recent admission into the European Union (of which Portugal is a member, too), are geographically distant from Portugal, with a few historical and cultural affinities and relatively unknown for the Portuguese business sector. Having this reference framework, two research questions were formulated: (1) what were the determinant factors of the internationalization of Portuguese companies, via foreign direct investment, for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe? (2) Which entry modes were used by Portuguese companies on international expansion for the CEECs and what were the reasons for these choices? To answer these questions it was conducted a literature review which focused on the main theories of internationalization, contemplating either the so-called "economic theories" and the "behavioral theories", and also a framework of Central and Eastern Europe as a destination of foreign direct investment, including Portuguese direct investment. Then, and in terms of empirical research, a methodology was adopted from multiple case studies, having been selected five Portuguese industrial companies with investments in the CEECs which were subjected to a detailed and cross-case analysis of its internationalization processes. This investigation is completed with the presentation and discussion of the main conclusions of the analysis of the case studies, and also mentioned are the contributions of this work for the companies and for the Academy, its limitations, and also suggestions for future researches.
