Muitos jovens, quando confrontados com o rumo a tomar, após o ensino
secundário, consideram a oportunidade de ingressar numa academia militar, pois estas
instituições fornecem tremendas oportunidades de uma educação gratuita e ensino de
primeira classe.
O presente estudo analisa as motivações dos alunos que são admitidos na
Academia da Força Aérea (AFA), destinados aos Quadros Permanentes de Oficiais (QP),
relativamente, ao modelo Institucional/Ocupacional de Charles Moskos, de modo a
verificar se existe uma opinião divergente ou convergente à sociedade civil de acordo
com as tendências sociais dominantes. Também se propõe verificar o processo que
caracteriza a escolha de especialidade e carreira.
No enquadramento teórico a esta temática, são abordados conceitos estruturantes,
que afectam a percepção do modo como os jovens perspectivam esta instituição. Assim, a
organização militar no contexto geral, a profissão militar, as relações civil-militar, as
motivações, os valores as representações dos jovens e a imagem pública da instituição
afiguram-se de grande importância.
Num segundo momento deste trabalho, apresenta-se a AFA, composta por dois
departamentos: universitário e politécnico, focalizando toda a sua estrutura funcional de
ensino e apontam-se aspectos relativos à escolha de especialidade.
Para este efeito foram recolhidos dados através de um inquérito, realizado, no ano
2008, aos alunos dos três anos de cada um dos departamentos, num total de 153.

Many young people, when considering what path to take after high school,
consider the possibility of attending a military academy, because these institutions
provide a tremendous opportunity for a free and first-class education and training.
The present work aims to analyse the motivations of the students, that are
admitted to Portuguese Air Force Academy, appointed to the Permanente Organization,
in regard to Charles Moskos institutional/occupational model, in order to verify if exists a
divergent or convergent opinion in relation to civil society according to dominant social
tendencies. It also intends to verify what kind of motivations leads the students to their
choice of expertise or career.
In the theoretical framing of this theme, there are approached structural concepts,
which affects the perception of the way that youngest puts in perspective of the military
institution. Consequently the military organization in is global context, the military
profession, the civil-military relations, the motivations, the values and the representation
of youngsters and the public image of the institution seems of crucial importance.
On a second moment of this study, the AFA is presented, composed by two
departments: University and Polytechnic, focusing all its functional structure of education
and there are pointed some aspects related to speciality selection.
In order to this achievement, data was collected through an inquiry, applied to 153
students belonging to both departments, during the year 2008.
