Este trabalho aborda o tema dos papéis sociais das mulheres e dos relacionamentos sócio-afetivos no
contexto da guerra colonial portuguesa, centrando-se nas trajetórias e vivências de mulheres que
acompanharam os maridos militares (oficiais e sargentos), nas suas comissões em África. O objetivo
geral é o de reconstituir o contexto em que estas mulheres decidiram viajar para África e, mais
especificamente, analisar a relação entre as suas trajetórias biográficas, valores e orientações e os
papéis sociais que desempenharam.
A recolha de informação teve por base uma abordagemqualitativa com recurso a doze entrevistas
semi-estruturadas e fontes documentais, cujos resultados foram analisados recorrendo à técnica de
análise de conteúdo através do programa informáticoMaxQda.
Os resultados obtidos apontam para a prevalência demotivações de tipo tradicional entre as mulheres
de oficias, a que se acrescentam motivações de tipoemancipatório entre as mulheres de sargentos e
para a predominância dos papéis familiares de esposa e mãe durante a estadia em África. Esta
experiência parece ter ocasionado entre as mulheresentrevistadas uma crescente consciencialização
social: de uma situação caracterizada pela ausênciade posicionamentos políticos fortes e
desconhecimento face ao contexto da guerra, encontramos hoje mulheres que adquiriram orientações
sociais proactivas, reflexivas quanto à sua posiçãoe ao suposto esquecimento de que terão sido alvo.

This work addresses the topic of women’s social roles and emotional relationships in the context of the
Portuguese colonial war, focusing on the life trajectories and experiences of women who followed
their military husbands (officers and NCO’s) in their deployments to the war in Africa. The general
objective is to account for the context in which they decided to travel to Africa, and more specifically
to analyze the relationship between biographic trajectories, socio-political values and orientation and
social roles.
Data collection followed a qualitative research strategy, through twelve semi-structured interviews and
documental sources, which were subject to content analysis with the MaxQda software.
The results point to the prevalence of traditional motivations among the wives of officers,
supplemented by emancipatory ones among the wives of NCO’s, as well as to the dominance of
family social roles (of mother and wife) during thestay in Africa. This experience seems to have
produced among these women a growing social awareness: from a situation characterized by the
absence of strong political positions and lack of knowledge about the war, we find nowadays women
with proactive social orientations, reflexive with regard to their position and the supposedly lack of
recognition towards their participation.
