O presente estudo explora de forma qualitativa as histórias de imigração irregular,
através de entrevistas narrativas realizadas a cinco imigrantes que vivem em situação
irregular em Portugal. Através da análise narrativa, os resultados sugerem que os
motivos que levam estas pessoas a imigrar podem ser económicos ou políticos e que
permanecem em Portugal com o objetivo de trabalhar e melhorar as suas condições de
vida. Apesar de existirem aspetos comuns às trajetórias dos imigrantes regulares e
irregulares, conclui-se que existem algumas adversidades e estratégias específicas
inerentes à situação de irregularidade. Devido à presença dos imigrantes em situação
irregular em Portugal e à lacuna que existe na literatura sobre os mesmos, este tipo de
estudo é importante para tornar visível esta realidade e apoiar o desenvolvimento de
projetos psicossociais em prol desta população.

The present investigation explores the stories of five unauthorized immigrants. For this
purpose, a narrative interview was conducted. Through narrative analysis the results
suggest that the main reasons for immigration are economic and political and that the
unauthorized immigrants stay in Portugal to improve their living conditions. Although
there are common aspects in the authorized and unauthorized immigrants life stories,
there are some adversities and specific strategies in unauthorized immigration
situations. Due to the presence of unauthorized immigrants in Portugal and the literature
gap, this study is relevant to bring to light this reality and support the development of
psychosocial projects in behalf of this population.
