Introdução: As doenças orais continuam a representar um desafio significativo para os
sistemas de saúde a nível global. A relação entre literacia em saúde oral, adesão
terapêutica e custos diretos em saúde constitui uma área ainda pouco explorada no
contexto português. A compreensão desta interligação é crucial para identificar barreiras ao
autocuidado e à utilização adequada dos serviços de saúde, permitindo desenvolver
estratégias de intervenção mais eficazes, tanto a nível clínico como de políticas públicas.
Objetivo: Avaliar os níveis de literacia em saúde oral de uma amostra dos pacientes de
clínicas dentárias privadas, de forma a identificar áreas de fragilidade, quais os elementos
que a influenciam e propor estratégias concretas para a sua melhoria.
Metodologia: Foi aplicado um questionário online durante as consultas de higiene oral,
numa amostra de conveniência.
Resultados: Dos 87 participantes, a maioria é do género feminino (54%) e a faixa etária
mais prevalente é entre 41 os 50 anos. Foi deduzido que os níveis de escolaridade
influenciam de forma positiva a literacia em saúde oral. Contudo, a presença de indivíduos
com gastos mais elevados em tratamentos dentários evidencia a persistência de
necessidades terapêuticas complexas, relacionadas com níveis na literacia em saúde oral
insuficientes.
Conclusão: Os resultados indicam que é fundamental reforçar a consciencialização para a
importância da prevenção e promover o aumento da literacia em saúde oral de indivíduos
com literacia insuficiente.

Background: Oral diseases continue to pose a major global public health challenge,
exerting a substantial burden on healthcare systems. The relationship between oral health
literacy, therapeutic adherence, and direct healthcare costs remains underexplored within
the Portuguese context. A comprehensive understanding of this interplay is essential to
identify barriers to self-care and to the appropriate utilization of healthcare services, thereby
supporting the development of more effective clinical and public health strategies.
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of oral health literacy among a sample of
patients attending private dental clinics, with the objective of identifying areas of vulnerability,
determining the factors that influence literacy levels, and proposing evidence-based
strategies to enhance oral health literacy.
Method: A structured online questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample of
participants during oral hygiene appointments.
Results: Among the 87 respondents, the majority were female (54%), with the most
prevalent age group ranging from 41 to 50 years. A positive association was revealed
between educational attainment and oral health literacy levels. Nevertheless, the presence
of individuals with higher dental treatment expenses suggests the persistence of complex
therapeutic needs, potentially linked to suboptimal oral health literacy.
Conclusion: The findings underscore the need to strengthen awareness of preventive oral
health measures and to implement targeted strategies aimed at improving oral health
literacy, particularly among individuals with limited understanding. Enhancing literacy in this
domain is a key step toward promoting equitable access to care and optimizing oral health
outcomes within the Portuguese population.
