This research aims to contribute to the understanding of the role of Oriental dance as a
cultural production of artistic nature, in the universe of disability. From a case study of the
project " Sentindo e Dançando” (Feeling and Dancing) developed in the Portuguese
Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Retarded Citizens in the town of Elvas, we
sought to examine the relationship between behavior and its significance and to investigate
the rationale of this group of women with special needs regarding their participation in the
project.
The main objective of this study was to try to understand the influence of the practice
of dance in this particular type of population, to determine the benefits and the type of impact
perceived in daily lives.
As to the results obtained, though these activities still play a little role with these
institutions, it was found that the project and his intervention was a success in this population,
from the perspective of users themselves, family, monitors, assistants and technicians.
The oriental dance meets the needs of such peculiar populations, clearly contributing
to the individual and social development of women with special needs, enabling a better
identity construction and integration into the urban community. This project revealed to have
an important role in the lives of these users, because the dance was like a new experience,
very rewarding both in terms of learning new skills, personal development, emotional
relationships and new networks of relationships. We have witnessed a social inclusion of
people with disabilities in society instilling a bit of sensitivity in the community for this
problem.
