In the present dissertation we intend to analyze the evolution of working time, with a view to ascertaining whether there was - and if it continues to exist- a tendency towards making it more flexible, namely through the four-day week. In this context, we begin by approaching important international and national diplomas related to this matter. On the other hand, within the scope of the Portuguese legal system, we make mention to the historical evolution of working time, in which we highlight the beginning of the first Labor Code. We also take the opportunity to refer ways of making working time more flexible, such as adaptability (by collective, individual and group regulation), the hour bank (by collective, individual - already revoked - and group regulation) and concentrated work, as they were emerging, as well as some modalities, namely, exemption from working hours, shift work, night work and overtime work. In addition, we also address the subject of the four-day week, in Portugal and in other legal systems, without, however, forgetting to make a reflection on the topic.
