conhecimento existente.

The main aim of this study is to understand the level of the success of China’s educational aid in Africa.
Guided by the notion of soft power, a comprehensive theoretical framework around culture, political
values and foreign policies was developed and research questions about the researched topic were
identified. The study employed a qualitative method. Specifically, 10 semi-structured interviews with
African students in China were conducted.
Our findings have revealed that the Chinese economic and development model is the most attractive
instrument of soft power, while culture and foreign policies are mainly perceived by African students in a
negative way. Additionally, political values, which are considered to be the most important source of soft
power, do not play a big role when Africans choose China as their educational destination, thus the
majority of students have a neutral attitude towards them. Under these circumstances, we can state that
our findings both support and reject some of the hypotheses which are presented by other scholars,
adding new insights to the existing knowledge.
