The emergence of Innovative Air Mobility (IAM) is expected to have a transformative impact on mobility and logistics. However, its implementation comes with challenges and potential negative impacts that must be assessed and mitigated prior to large-scale deployment. Among these challenges, visual pollution has been designated as a significant concern. Therefore, this dissertation aims to explore how people perceive visual pollution in the context of IAM and identify the determinant aspects that shape these perceptions. Data was collected through focus groups, followed by a thematic analysis, a survey and an exploratory statistical analysis. The results revealed that the determinant aspects of visual pollution regarding IAM can be grouped into three main areas: drone properties, human-drone interactions and dynamic visual effects. Within these categories, the colour of drones, their size, the design of the drone, the noise it produces, the drone’s altitude, distance from people, type of flight area, shadows, drone quantity, flight schedule and air space structure were all identified as capable of influencing the visual pollution perceptions. The Principal Component Analysis validated these results, forming seven principal components, and it concluded that factors such as type of flight area, colour, size and altitude may have a greater weight in the visual acceptance of IAM than anticipated. These findings provide valuable citizen-centred insights for policy makers, regulators and manufacturers, helping mitigate possible impacts while enhancing social acceptance, therefore, contributing to its successful implementation.
