For a long time, the women’s music practice was restricted to the private space in classic music, where permission to young women, proceeding from bourgeoisie and nobility, was given to sing and/ or play fixed instruments like piano. Nevertheless, the transition of the 19th century to the 20th century was registered by the change of woman’s paper in society and consequently in music, with the appearance of the first soloists and women playing male instruments. So this work talk about the relation between music and women in the transition of the 19th century to the 20th century, essentiality in the paper perform by the first portuguese instrumentalist. And talk about the singular case of Guilhermina Suggia, the first portuguese violoncellist soloist. The present thesis focalises on the problematic of social and personal singularity. So we proceed to the context analysis of music in Portugal, from the 18th century, and women in music; and reconstitution of Guilhermina Suggia biographic dimensions.
