O target costing propõe a inversão deste processo,
custos do produto.

The aim of this study is the review of knowledge about the method of pricing, target
costing, by studying the rates of implementation of the method in different countries
and defining the most prominent features in the automotive industry.
This method is characterized by reversing the widespread tendency to define costs in the
production phase, add to it a profit margin and get the market sales price. The target
costing proposes the reverse of this process, arguing the primarily definition of price
and the subsequent calculation of the target cost. The advantages of this method are
significant and focus the attention of the entire organization in meeting the fundamental
objective, reducing product costs.
In order to check the use of the method in different countries, empirical studies, from a
period between 1998 and 2010, were analysed. This analysis showed that the potential
benefit of the method does not seem to interest other users from countries worldwide.
With its origin in Japan, the method has strong characteristics that are related to the
Japanese corporate culture and the advantages demonstrated by the target costing are
not perceived by other business cultures.
In the identification of the most significant feature, six automotive companies were
analysed, in a period between 1995 and 2002. The best adaptation of the method to the
industry amazed companies that operate in this area, being the rate of use of the method
quite high. While using target costing, these companies express a concern with the
development of human resources within the product value chain.
