Research about emotion understanding shows that individual differences (language,
attachment and parental discourse) influence its development but doubts still remain about
the role of Intellectual Functioning. On the other hand, children with Learning Disabilities
(LD) show difficulties in the comprehension of complex emotions, but research in this area
has been focused in the analysis of only some components of emotion understanding (EU),
thus being important to study the relation with verbal cognitive skills and the interference
with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and with internalizing and
externalizing behaviours. The goal of the present study is a) to analyse nine components of
EU in children with LD; b) to verify in which extent EU is related with verbal cognitive skills
and with externalizing and internalizing behaviours in children with LD. To this end, a study
was conducted with 48 children diagnosed with LD (N=25 without ADHD; N=23
comorbidity ADHD) aged between 7 and 10 years and their cognitive skills, emotional
understanding and parental perception were assessed. Results show a positive correlation
between the general level of emotion understanding and verbal skills, in particular with the
understanding of complex emotions. It was also found that a lower EU was associated with
greater depressive and anxiety symptoms and there were no differences in the EU due to the
presence of ADHD. Results are presented and discussed under a theoretical framework.
