Este trabalho é concebido numa altura em que o debate sobre a pobreza urbana está na ordem do dia, e
como forma de dar resposta a algumas inquietações relativas à pobreza urbana, surgiu este trabalho.
Moçambique é um país que possui muitas assimetrias sociais, existe uma minoria que possui
rendimentos muito altos, e uma maioria que tem dificuldades de ter acesso a água ou seja ainda não
conseguem satisfazer as necessidades primárias, segundo a (pirâmide das necessidades de Maslow)1,
estes indivíduos, ainda estão na base da pirâmide.
Na cidade de Maputo, em particular, estas assimetrias estão mais expostas, e, é daí que se procura
perceber o papel das instituições de microcrédito na minimização da pobreza urbana, as dificuldades
com que se deparam aqueles que procuram esses serviços.
A questão de fundo que este trabalho procura responder é se as instituições de microcrédito estão a
ajudar ou não no combate à pobreza urbana na cidade Maputo.

This paper was conceived in a period when the debate about urban poverty is the order of the day, and
also as a way to respond to some concerns regarding urban poverty, hence this research paper was
perceived.
Mozambique is a country filled with social asymmetries, there is a minority with very high incomes,
and a majority with difficulties to find drinking water, that is, who have not been able to meet their
primary needs from the perspective of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
The City of Maputo in particular is where this asymmetry is more evident, and thus it raises the quest
for the role of microfinance institutions in the reduction of urban poverty, as well as the difficulties
faced by those who seek these services.
The key question that this paper seeks to address is whether the microfinance institutions are helping,
or not, in the fight against poverty in the City of Maputo.
