This study fits within the Marketing and Consumer Behaviour, with special emphasis on the behavior of book purchasing in Portugal. In a competitive environment increasingly complex, it is interesting to analyze and reflect on the changes in the general context concerning the patterns of consumer behavior. Given the increasing power of the customer as a player in the market, it is extremely important that the enterprise business models are best suited to the client’s needs, which makes it crucial to assess changes in behavior. The study pretends to evaluate the impact that technological changes have had on the book market, specifically the impact that developing a new reading format - the e-book - had in the consumption habits of readers, in the process of purchase decision and in the relationship of the reader with the book. The project also pretends to determine some relevant variables in the decision process, as well as their weight throughout the buying process, and compare them with studies conducted in other countries. In order to give consistency to the study, every empirical research was based on the results obtained by a survey applied to 197 individuals geographically limited to Portugal, with more than 18 years who are familiar with the concept of the ebook. The results show a strong resistance in the change to digital reading and reveal that most people still prefer the printed format despite knowing what is an ebook and may have the experience. This choice is mainly justified by the taste for physical sensation of the book that is hardly reproduced by the digital format. We conclude that innovation is important in this market to meet the early adopters, but it must consider the preferences and needs of most consumers.
