Traffic accidents in Portugal is a serious problem, both by the frequency with which they occur, as the high number of deaths resulting. The guilt felt by accident, or formally assigned, and damage associated with it, seem to foster feelings of regret and change of behaviour. The overall objective of the study was to understand the relationship of guilt in road accidents and behaviour change towards prevention. This objective was assessed through two specific aims: (1) analysis of the relationship between self-blame in accidents and behaviour change towards prevention and (2) examining the relationship between assigned blame and behaviour change towards prevention. We used two analytical tools - questionnaire and semi-structured interview - applied to 19 subjects (13 men / 6 women) with a mean age of 34.2 years, who suffered accidents in the last 3-4 years, which resulted in physical injury to themselves or others. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The results suggest that self-blame, characterological and behavioural, did not contribute directly to behaviour change (individuals tended to attribute blame externally rather than self-blame). Furthermore, and according to the second aim of this research, the results suggest that formally assigned blame could be contributed to the behaviour changes after the accident. This study concludes that there is a larger influence of formal blame than self-blame in changing behaviours road.
