Franchising is a business model format based on the distribution of goods and/or
services through the licencing of a brand, a set of rights over intellectual property and a
business format by the terms of a contract between two parts, in which one gives the
model for financial compensation.
Franchising is growing in use as model all over the world, with more brands, networks
and units appearing every day. There is not an inhabited continent in the world where
franchising doesn’t exist.
In Europe franchising is an economic enabler, promoting the creation of companies and
small businesses, and consequently generating employment and turnover.
It also contributes for the transformation, modernization and professionalization of
traditional trades and services, as well as creation of new ones.
This work aims at analysing franchising as a business format, through its
characteristics, advantages and disadvantages as well as its applicability to the
traditional trade and commerce of flowers and plants in Portugal, by highlighting the
success points and failures of a practical real case, in order to understand if it can be
done or not and with which level of adaptations.
The lessons taken from this analysis were that franchising can be applicable to the retail
trade (commerce) of flowers and plants, but there will be necessary to many adaptations
comparatively to the normal ways of the trade (work).
