The Lagoa de Óbidos has been struggling for many years against its natural disappearance. It
is known that wetlands such as this lagoon, suffer from this tendency, demanding the need to
be safeguarded due to their high biodiversity. Several maintenance works have been occurring
on this lagoon in the past recent years, however the result towards its protection has not been
positive. There are multiple antagonistic points of view between each other in the best way to
intervene with the Lagoa de Óbidos, including expert’s point of view, undertaking the works
and vision of fishermen and shellfish men, who devote their lives to this place and observe the
changes of this ecosystem. The aim of this thesis is to convey indigenous knowledge of the
community, advertise the voice of this minority that has been ignored everytime there are
decisions to be made during lagoon interventions. As the community is the main affected
entity, fishermen and shellfish men, are the active audience of these changes. Through them
we can experience another perspective on this troubleshooting that goes beyond the
deliberations made by the holders of more scientific knowledge. The position of the fishing
community is important to the overall understanding in combining indigenous knowledge.
The status of the fishing community is important to the overall understanding in combining
indigenous knowledge of these fishermen, so that in the near future it is possible to ally both
fishermen and expert knowledge (not least important) who have been conducting works in
Lagoa de Óbidos so that this problem is not remedied but solved efficiently and definitively.
