O final do séc.

The end of the 20th Century witnessed the establishment of a movement which advocates the use of technology to “enhance” humans. Due to its focus on the desirability of the emergence of beings which, eluding current definitions of humanity would be considered “post-humans”, that movement is known as “transhumanism”. This dissertation looks into the ontological possibility of overcoming humans by technology, posing the following question: If such technological modifications can be done, will they alter humans in their Being? After pointing out the motivations underlying the transhumanist philosophy, I establish a discontinuity between the philosophy and technique, advocating that the emergence of a post-human condition is independent from the existence of a transhumanist movement. The hypothesis of overcoming humans by technology is explored through the integration of Information and Communication Technologies, by which I examine the intersection between the characteristics of the Web and the “They” as a structural element of human everydayness. Such integration grounds the loss of authentic Self through a delivery into a new entity emerging from the integration of the Web – the “We”- which endangers human existence as possibility. The example of the Web’s integration shows that the emergence of a post-human condition is ontologically possible and that the plasticity that characterizes humanity in its dealings with technique isn’t unlimited
