This investigation aims to study the reaction of the Portuguese stock index PSI-20 against gold and crude oil prices. Daily closing data were applied in a period between 2008 and 2020. To investigate these data, the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) estimator proposed by Shin et al. (2014) was used, making short and long-term, with the main goal of verifying the asymmetric effects of the variables. In this study, when applying the NARDL estimator, the existence of short and long-term asymmetries of gold and crude oil compared to the PSI-20 is concluded. We can also conclude, like Baur & Lucey (2010) the presence of safe-haven behavior on the part of gold, that is, whenever there are upward movements in this asset, the PSI-20 will depreciate and vice-versa. On the other hand, it provides the respective responses of the PSI-20 to the positive and negative shocks of gold, crude oil and their associated volatilities through dynamic multiplier graphs. It was also discovered that the price of gold has a negative relationship and crude oil has a positive relationship with the PSI-20 in long-term tests. Asymmetric impacts were also verified in the short-term test.
