The nature of their activity, which includes functions such as the protection of lives and property, as well as fire-fighting, which often involve the risk of life itself, they are exposed to extreme situations which, generators of stress, have a negative impact on their psychological well-being (Monteiro, 2008). Contrary to other professional groups, studies on the causes and effects of stress on the work of firefighters are still scarce. In this sense, it is pertinent to carry out studies that can identify their sources of stress, in order to design an intervention that may decrease them. This intervention should focus on the promotion of work resources, whether in physical, psychological, social or organizational aspects, that increase motivation and commitment to work and organization and, subsequently, contribute to the reduction of occupational stress of these professionals. This intervention should focus on the promotion of work resources, whether in physical, psychological, social or organizational aspects, that increase motivation and commitment to work and organization and, subsequently, contribute to the reduction of occupational stress of these professionals. The results, regarding the sources of stress of this professional group, are in agreement with the literature suggesting that these are related to the chronic and organizational requirements. Regarding the resources that these professionals use, and we conclude, they essentially resort to task-oriented coping strategies and social support. Thus, the main objective of this study was to perform a diagnosis of the needs of the main sources of occupational stress in Portuguese firefighters, so that it may be possible to suggest intervention recommendations, that enhance the capabilities of existing professionals.
