inanimado.

The present research explores the cognitive mechanisms that underlie spontaneous trait
transference (STT), specifically (a) the distribution of visual attention between the familiar
actor photo and the brand and (b) the congruency and incongruence of the brand with the trait
implied by behavior. The occurrence of STT to brands and the influence of expectancies
about the brands are examined. The occurrence of STT to inanimate objects was already
demonstrated: association between inanimate objects and traits inferred from behaviors are
spontaneously established (Brown & Bassili, 2002). We propose, once in the presence of a
trait implied by behaviors performed by a familiar actor (a celebrity), those traits would be
transference to a brand incidentally present in the context . Although the association between
the trait and the brand may be inhibited if the trait was inconsistent with the expectancies
about the brand (see Wigboldus et al, 2003), but the trait will be transferred to the brand if it
was congruent with the expectancies about the brand. The results showed the STT occurred
independently from the congruence or incongruence of the brand with the trait. It will be
contended that this result may occur because STT is a simple associative and automatic
process; the STT reflects a passive process in which people associatively link the traits and
the brands. The implications of these results will be discussed for STT.
