Esta investigação teve por objectivo explorar o impacto e a importância da liderança do
treinador na transição do futebol de formação para o futebol profissional, a partir da visão dos
liderados de sucesso.
A partir do final dos anos 90, com a chamada “Geração de Ouro”, Portugal passou a contar
com um grupo de futebolistas de nível internacional que fizeram carreira a nível nacional e
internacional. Num momento de maior dificuldade de afirmação dos futebolistas portugueses,
dado o número de futebolistas estrangeiros nos clubes portugueses, é importante compreender
as principais razões de sucesso e de insucesso para a afirmação de jovens promessas do
futebol de formação no futebol profissional.
Este trabalho apresenta uma revisão de literatura sobre o tema da liderança do treinador, com
especial enfoque na liderança de jovens jogadores e, em seguida, um trabalho de campo com
entrevistas em profundidade, realizadas junto de futebolistas portugueses que, nas últimas
duas décadas, foram figuras proeminentes na selecção nacional de futebol.
Pretende-se, desta investigação, retirar ensinamentos a partir destes casos de sucesso de
afirmação no futebol sénior, e contribuir para o aproveitamento de talentos existentes nos
escalões de formação em Portugal, por parte dos treinadores.

This research emerges with a clear purpose of exploring the role of the coach and his type of
leadership in the transition of the phase of training to the professional soccer in the
perspective of the players.
Since the late 80ies, with the so-called "Golden Generation", Portugal now has a group of
world-class players who have made national and international careers. In the context of great
difficulty of the Portuguese players to affirm themselves in the field, given the number of
foreign players in the Portuguese clubs, it is important to understand the main the reasons for
the success and failure of young soccer training promises in the professional football.
This research begins with a literature review on the topic of coach leadership, with a special
focus on the leadership of young players, and presents, then, the results of the empiric field
work with in-depth interviews that were conducted with well-succeeded Portuguese players
that, in the past two decades, were prominent players in national football team.
Our purpose in this research is to learn from these cases of success in senior Portuguese
football, as well as to contribute to the utilization of the existing talents in the Portuguese
youth, from the part of coaches.
