Nos últimos anos, o turismo médico tem vindo a crescer globalmente como área de interesse
para profissionais e académicos. Em Portugal, a investigação não parece acompanhar o
desenvolvimento deste mercado de nicho e, apesar dos seus atributos e potencial
reconhecidos internacionalmente, ainda carece de ser explorado cientificamente.
Assim, este estudo tem como objetivos compreender o cenário atual do turismo médico
em Portugal e contribuir para o acompanhamento da literatura mais relevante sobre o tema.
A análise bibliométrica foi a metodologia adotada para descrever e mapear uma amostra de
24 documentos, publicados entre 2010 e 2024, a partir de gráficos produzidos pelos softwares
VOSviewer e Biblioshiny.
De um modo geral, os resultados obtidos revelam uma tendência decrescente na
produção científica do turismo médico em Portugal, com publicações nacionais
predominantemente académicas (dissertações/teses). Por sua vez, artigos relacionados com
turismo procreativo, perceções dos turistas médicos e qualidade e segurança hospitalar foram
os mais citados, corroborados pelos picos de elevada influência das métricas de impacto.
Vários grupos de investigadores suportaram a literatura sobre o turismo médico em
Portugal, sendo as diferentes escolas de pensamento referências na conceptualização e
evolução do tema, globalização dos cuidados de saúde e experiência dos turistas médicos e
competitividade e viabilidade económica do mercado.
Os principais eixos temáticos, e mais diferenciados, incluem marketing, experiência do
doente e qualidade dos serviços de saúde. Outros menos elaborados incluem
sustentabilidade, envelhecimento ativo, comunicação digital em saúde, mediadores clínicos e
turismo procreativo.
Mediante futuras diligências científicas e estratégicas, esta tendência poderá ser
eventualmente redirecionada.

In recent years, medical tourism has been growing globally as an area of interest for
professionals and academics. In Portugal, research does not seem to keep pace with the
development of this niche market and despite its internationally recognized attributes and
potential, it still needs to be explored scientifically.
Therefore, this study aims to understand the current scenario of medical tourism in
Portugal and contribute to the monitoring of the most relevant literature on the subject.
Bibliometric analysis was the methodology adopted to describe and map a dataset of 24
documents, published between 2010 and 2024, based on graphs produced by the VOSviewer
and Biblioshiny software.
Overall, the results obtained reveal a downward trend in scientific production on medical
tourism in Portugal, with predominantly academic national publications (dissertations/theses).
On the other hand, articles related to reproductive tourism, perceptions of medical tourists, and
hospital quality and safety were the most cited, corroborated by peaks of high influence in
impact metrics.
Several groups of researchers supported the literature on medical tourism in Portugal, with
different schools of thought being references in the conceptualization and evolution of the
topic, globalization of healthcare and the experience of medical tourists, and the
competitiveness and economic viability of the market.
The main and most differentiated thematic axis include marketing, patient experience, and
quality of health services. Other less developed axis include sustainability, active aging, digital
communication in health, clinical mediators, and reproductive tourism.
Through future scientific and strategic efforts, this trend may eventually be redirected.
