PhD Programme in Anthropology (jointly organized by Iscte/NOVA FCSH).

The Departments of Anthropology of NOVA FCSH and Iscte have established the highest standards of research and teaching since the 1980s.

In the 21st century their respective research units have joined their efforts in a common, inter-university research centre – CRIA, Center for Research in Anthropology. Most lecturers belong to this centre, and some to CEI-IUL (International Studies Centre), CICS-NOVA (Interdisciplinary Social Science Centre) and IHC (Institute for Contemporary History).

The doctoral programmes of NOVA FCSH and Iscte have merged into a  PhD Programme in Anthropology, now in its 5th edition, thus further promoting the cooperation between lecturers, researchers and resources of both institutions, in order to offer the highest standards of graduate education in Anthropology.

Directors:

Miguel Vale de Almeida (Iscte), Susana Trovão (NOVA FCSH)

Director(s) message

"Anthropology is the most humanistic of the sciences and the most scientific of the humanities", said Alfred Kroeber. Learning Anthropology means making the strange familiar and the familiar strange. Doctoral training at ISCTE aims at preparing scientists who are capable of understanding, of interpreting, and of explaining to the wider society how human diversity is articulated in the contemporary world.

"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time". (T. S. Eliot)
