Doctoral candidates may pursue specialized study by completing a minimum of two elective units offered in one of the following areas:

- New Media, Social Networks and Technology
- The Public, Rhetoric and Politics in Relation
- Networked Journalism: Professional Practice and Business
- Communication and Humanitarian Action
- Communication in Health
- Political Economy of News and Entertainment

There are also "3rd cycle scholarships", which imply pedagogical support from the scholarship holders to the professors, in a number to be decided annually by the ISCTE-IUL Management Board.
