Director`s Message
Profa . D aSoraya Genin
Conservation and Rehabilitation of cultural heritage are globally recognized as a means to meet the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the UN's Agenda 2030. The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Conservation and Rehabilitation fits fully into these goals.
It is a unique course in Portugal in this area. It integrates ateliers in the study plan for the development of construction practices. This teaching method, developed in the "Architecture Practices" workshop since 2012, was recognized by the International Construction Fair TEKTÓNICA with the Promoter Academy award and is a great success among students.
The course relies on the method of practical learning to complement the theoretical teaching. It includes international principles and recommendations for cultural heritage, the history and pathology of construction, diagnostic methods and intervention techniques.
Students have the opportunity to "get hands-on" to execute conservation works, accompanied by specialized professionals. Traditional and contemporary techniques are addressed, exploring different materials and construction systems.
Learning new technologies using digital tools is applied in the survey, inventorying, documentation, and visualization of cultural heritage, a complementary method to direct observation, both in the analysis and design phases.
Practices are preferably framed in a professional environment and in a real-life context.
2026/2027
The curricular design of the course relates to the methodology of Conservation and Rehabilitation. The first semester is dedicated to the survey and diagnosis, and the second semester to the project. Of the total of eight curricular units, five are of the theoretical-practical type, with a greater expository component and include distance learning by guest lecturers. Three curricular units are of the practical-laboratorial type and resort to the active learning method for problem solving (hands-on). Two ateliers, one in each semester, take place in workshop mode, at a time to be agreed with the specialized companies, depending on the site and the type of work to be developed, which may include: earth constructions, stone and brick masonry constructions, wood, glass, metal, reinforced concrete constructions, coatings and finishings. The workshops will operate in concentrated blocks of three continuous days or three consecutive Saturdays, during daytime hours.

Teaching
The professors on this course come from several departments at ISCTE: Architecture and Urbanism, History, and Information Sciences and Technology.
Guest lecturers from public and private entities ensure the link with the professional environment, while experts from the ICOMOS University Forum network ensure specific learning in an international context.
The course is taught in Portuguese and English, promoting the participation of international faculty and students. The English language prevails in classes taught by foreign guests and when the number of international students justifies it.
Note
- Students who attend exclusively the 1st semester course units are awarded a 2nd Cycle Specialized Studies Diploma in Sustainable Conservation and Rehabilitation.
- Students who wish to continue their studies may enroll in the 2nd year to obtain a Master's degree in Conservation and Sustainable Rehabilitation (pending A3ES evaluation).

Employability
The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Conservation and Rehabilitation offers an employment opportunity. Urban Rehabilitation occupies a central place in the construction sector. The trend is increasing, driven by government subsidies and European aid, in order to reduce CO2 emissions caused by new construction in reinforced concrete.
Professional Associations in Portugal discuss accreditation and the creation of Specialization in Cultural Heritage Conservation, in particular the Order of Engineers (creation of specialization in progress) and the Order of Architects (recommendations of the 15th Congress of the Order of Architects, 2018).
In other countries, architects' access to restoration work follows a strict accreditation procedure (UK) or requires a certificate (Netherlands) or specialization courses (France, Ireland).
