Tendo em conta a massificação do sistema de ensino devida à universalização de acesso à escola, procura-se conhecer e compreender o sucesso/insucesso vivido pelos alunos do 9º ano de escolaridade na Região Autónoma da Madeira. Por um lado, pretende-se analisar o modo como o contexto social se afirma como um elemento que potencia ou reduz as possibilidades de sucesso pondo em causa o ideal de igualdade de oportunidades. Por outro, compreender como se articula o desempenho escolar com as condições escolares de que beneficiam os alunos, ao nível das turmas e dos horários. A investigação permitiu identificar que os alunos oriundos das classes sociais com menores recursos e mais mal posicionados na escala social são os que mais ficam retidos e que, no interior da escola, é criada uma diferenciação que tem por base as trajectórias escolares realizadas.

Considering the expansion of the educational system and the universality of school, it is our intention to understand the school performance of the youngsters who attend the last year of compulsory education in Madeira. On the one hand, we will analyse how social contexts increase or reduce the possibilities of success and influence the ideal of equal opportunities. On the other hand, we will analyse the relation between the school performance of students and the conditions provided by schools in what concerns classes and timetables. The investigation showed us that the students form poor backgrounds are the ones who more frequently have school failure and that the selection of students is based on the results they achieve.
