Ao longo dos últimos anos, muito se foi falado na comunicação social portuguesa sobre o caráter mais sensacionalista das televisões generalistas do país, incrementado pela disputa de audiência com a CMTV. Este trabalho analisa o atual cenário das coberturas policiais nos telejornais do horário nobre dos três principais canais generalistas de Portugal: RTP 1, SIC e TVI, com o objetivo de compreender se houve um aumento deste tipo de abordagem. Partindo da discussão de conceitos como gatekeeping, valores-notícia, audiência, sensacionalismo e jornalismo policial, recorre-se às vertentes quantitativa e qualitativa da análise de conteúdo para proceder à investigação. São analisadas sete variáveis, que traçam um panorama estabilizado. Em números absolutos, não se observa um aumento de cobertura policial nos alinhamentos dos jornais, mas nota-se um conjunto de estratégias para atrair o telespectador. A RTP 1 aposta em formatos mais aprofundados de notícias, a SIC investe em destaques das pautas na abertura e ao longo da edição do Jornal da Noite, e a TVI utiliza os discursos cheios de sentimentos de testemunhas como principal fonte de informação para a construção das narrativas.

Over the past few years, much has been said in the Portuguese media about the sensationalist character of the national generalist television channels, which has been compounded by the audience dispute with CMTV. This work analyzes the current scenario of police coverage in the prime time television news programs of the three main generalist channels in Portugal: RTP 1, SIC and TVI, trying to understanding whether there was an increase of this type of approach. Starting from the discussion of concepts such as gatekeeping, news-values, audience, sensationalism and police journalism, the work uses the quantitative and qualitative aspects of content analysis to proceed with the investigation. Seven variables are analyzed, which outline a stabilized panorama. In absolute numbers, there is no increase in police coverage in newspaper alignments, but a set of strategies to attract the viewer is noted. RTP 1 bets on more in-depth news formats, SIC invests in the highlights at the opening and throughout the edition of Jornal da Noite, and TVI uses speeches full of feelings of witnesses as the main source of information for the construction of narratives.
