A presente dissertação pretende colocar em paralelo ou em confronto directo a arquitectura e a literatura. O título, "Há uma data na varanda desta sala", remete ao caso de estudo concreto, sendo a primeira frase do livro "A Sibila", de Agustina Bessa Luís. A importância da linguagem é fulcral nestas duas artes, sendo-o claramente desde sempre na literatura e tendo vindo, ao longo do tempo, a atingir proporções maiores na arquitectura. A contextualização espacial do imaginário descrito revela a presença constante da arquitectura na literatura. No entanto, este estudo evidencia a importância da arquitectura na escrita não só como fundo de acção mas também como algo mutável, alterando ao longo dos tempos de narração. São utilizados como base dois romances da autora, ambos com ligações distintas à esfera rural e à urbana. Propõe-se uma leitura analítica dos espaços descritos face às temáticas principais da teoria da arquitectura da época em estudo, a fim de delinear os contornos dos dois temas colocados lado a lado. São abordados documentos de interesse para a historiografia portuguesa, como o Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular Portuguesa, mas também de importância global, como as obras teóricas realizadas por elementos do Team 10, compreendendo a dimensão da ideia literária aplicada sob um ponto de vista antropológico, ou seja, estendido a toda a sociedade. Para complementar a leitura conjugada das duas artes, contextualizam-se filosoficamente expressões de competência arquitectónica, sejam provenientes do habitar ou do construir, compreendendo a dimensão da linguagem utilizada, de modo a entender o que a palavra edifica ou, por outro lado, derruba.

The present dissertation intends to put in parallel or in direct confrontation architecture and literature. The title, Há uma data na veranda desta sala, refers to the specific case study, for this is the first sentence of the book "A Sibila", by Agustina Bessa Luís. The importance of language is central to these two arts, which has always been clear in literature and has, over time, reached higher proportions in architecture. The spatial contextualization of the discribed imaginary reveals the constant presence of architecture in literature. However, this study highlights the importance of architecture in writing not only as a background for action but also as something changeable, altering throughout the times of narration. Two novels of the author are used as basis, with different connections to the rural and urban sphere. An analytical reading of the spaces described is presented, in comparison with the main themes of the architectural theory at the time in study, thus outlining the contours of the two main topics. Documents of interest to Portuguese historiography, as the "Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular Portuguesa", but also of global importance, as the theoretic works carried out by Team 10 elements, are discussed, comprising the dimension of the literary idea applied from an anthropological point of view, i.e. extended to the whole society. To complement the combined reading of the two arts, expressions of architectural competence are philosophically contextualized, whether they come from dwelling or building, understanding the dimension of the language used, in order to understand what the word builds or, on the other hand, unbuilds.
