A saúde sexual, engloba os comportamentos individuais, as condições sociais que os estruturam, a existência de políticas públicas eficazes, o acesso e a utilização dos serviços de saúde.
A hipótese que se constituiu como o motor desta pesquisa implicou a consideração de que a génese das representações sociais dos homens sobre saúde sexual seria analisável através das dinâmicas sociais que se operam entre a estrutura e a agência e que incluem a problematização da experiência social de saúde/doença sexual dos homens, a caraterização sociodemográfica dos envolvidos (indicadores socioprofissionais, idade, níveis de escolaridade e situação conjugal) e os processos de interação implicados no acesso e na utilização dos cuidados de saúde.
Com base no modelo analítico, a pesquisa desenvolveu-se de acordo com os pressupostos de uma abordagem qualitativa, com base na opção pelas entrevistas semiestruturadas como principal técnica de pesquisa. Essas entrevistas englobaram como participantes, protagonistas do campo da saúde sexual e homens, e em cada grupo, foram procurados os casos que pudessem contribuir para o estudo das variações e diferenciações identificadas no terreno em análise.
Os aspetos que evidenciam ser estruturais nesta problemática dizem respeito à especificidade da saúde sexual dos homens incidir fundamentalmente nas dificuldades de acesso aos cuidados de saúde, à incompreensão dos profissionais relativamente às formas de acesso, e à centralidade neste campo, ser feita a partir da saúde reprodutiva feminina relegando a saúde sexual e os homens para uma posição marginal.

Sexual health encompasses individual behaviours, the social conditions that structure them, the existence of effective public policies, access to and use of health services.
The hypothesis that constituted the motor of this research, implied the consideration that the genesis of men’s social representations on sexual health could be analysed through the social dynamics operating between structure and agency and that included the problematization of the social experience of sexual health/illness, the social-demographic characteristics of the ones involved (socio-professional indicators, age, levels of schooling and marital status) and the interaction processes involved in the access and use of sexual health care.
Based on the analytical model, the research was developed according to the assumptions of a qualitative approach, taking the semi-structured interviews as the main research technique. These interviews included as participants, protagonists in the field of sexual health and men, and in each group, cases were sought that could contribute to the study of the variations and differentiations identified in the terrain under analysis.
The results of this research highlight the complexity of the relationship between structure and agency regarding men's sexual health /illness. Aspects that are shown to be structural under such a problematic are men’s sexual health specificity focused mostly on the difficulty of access to health care, the health professionals’ incomprehension regarding that access and the centrality in this field that happens around women’s reproductive health that relegates men to a peripheral position.
