The Ph.D. program takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore critical global issues centered on a region of growing importance in the international system. Students gain analytical and problem-solving skills while deepening their methodological tools and knowledge on various subject areas throughout the program in a vibrant academic environment in conjunction with the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte).

In the first year, the course offers, in five weeks per semester (November/December and February/March), advanced training in African Studies through a set of Curricular Units with a strong methodological slant and through the discussion of current issues in Africa. Students prepare their individual research projects in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years, accompanied by a research project seminar. In addition to the teaching component, the doctorate organizes a series of conferences in African Studies in conjunction with the Master in African Studies, which complements the various academic seminars and events organized at Iscte. 

A merit-based scholarship may be awarded to candidates for this course.
