LO1 - To present the basic concepts, objectives, problems and dilemma, as well as contemporary challenges of scientific research in the social sciences.
LO2 - To stimulate critical debate about the nature, the goals and the means of scientific research in the social sciences.
LO3 - To support the choice of relevant and hopefully innovative themes and topics for the elaboration of the master dissertations.
LO4 - To develop the students? research skills, including for methodological rigour and critical reflection.
LO5 ? To develop written and oral communication skills.
1.Introduction to scientific research and to the methodologies of scientific research in the social sciences and to the challenges of pluridisciplinary and interdisciplinar research. Fundamental research, applied research and experimental development. Neutrality or engagement in the sciences. Challenges of the social sciences in a changing society, economically, technologically, socially and culturally.
2.Research themes and topics in governance and sustainability of the sea. How to design a research project leading to the master dissertation?
3.Designing and elaborating a research project: i) research object and objectives; ii) project?s justification; iii) state-of-the-art; iv) methodologies; v) documentary and bibliographic sources; vi) dissertation structure and format; vii) modes of citation and of bibliographic referencing.
4.Oral presentation and discussion in class of the research themes/topics to be developed by the students.
Assessment throughout the semester is that occurring regularly, during the curricular period.
Theoretical classes seek to expose basic ideas and concepts relating to scientific research in the social sciences, and research methodologies.Practical classes aim to assist in the design of their research projects leading to the elaboration of their dissertations. 1st is the choice of the theme/topic to investigate. Students shall expound their plan for an individual research project presented and discussed in class,which will offer the basis for the evaluation.

Master Project in Governance and Sustainability of the Sea
1. To plan and develop a research in accordance with scientific and ethic requirements
2. To develop oral and written communication skills
3. To contribute to the development and dissemination of the subjects of ocean governance and sustainability within academy and civil society in national and international contexts
Considering the nature and goals of the Curricular Unit Work Project there is not a syllabus organized through topics. Work Project development involves diferente stages and concludes with the delivery of the Work Project at the end of 2º year/2nd semestet of the Master in Interdisciplinary Studies of the Sea.
In 1st semester of 2nd year the classes consist in the presentation of the first steps (pre-project, main concepts, methodology and bibliographic research) of research envisaging the delivery of the Work Project.
