Gustavo Cardoso is Full Professor of Sociology of Communication at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and a researcher at CIES. He is also an associate researcher at CADIS (Center d'Analyze et d'Interventions Sociologiques) in Paris and Director of OberCom - Observatório dos Meios de Comunicação Social in Lisbon. He is currently the director of the PhD in Communication Sciences and of three post-graduate programs in Communication at ISCTE-IUL, namely the Post-Graduate program in Journalism, the Post-Graduate program in Factchecking and disinformation, and the Post-Graduate program in Communication and Politics.
From 1996 to 2006, he was advisor to the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, for Information Society and Telecommunications policy. From 2006-2012, he was non-executive Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese news agency Lusa. In 2006 he was awarded the degree of "Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique" for relevant services rendered to Portugal. In 2009 he was elected as Young Global Leader of the WEF and in 2018 he was proposed to be a member of the Academia Europaea where he holds the position of member of the Cinema, media and visual studies section. He has a degree in Business Organization and Management, a Master in European Studies and a PhD in Sociology of Communication. He also holds a specialization in "Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century" from the Harvard Kennedy School.
Jorge Vieira is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology of the School of Sociology and Public Policies at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
He is a member of the board of directors of the Masters in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies and of LIA Iscte - Laboratory for Innovation at the Academy.
He holds a PhD in Sociology and a Master's Degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technology from ISCTE-IUL.
He teaches and tutors in the masters programs of Communication, Culture and Information Technologies; Entrepreneurship and Culture Studies, as well as in the graduation in Sociology and in the PhD in Communication Sciences.
In addition to teaching he develops research at the Center for Research and Studies of Sociology - CIES-IUL as an integrated PHD Researcher and at OberCom - Observatório da Comunicação.
He was already a researcher in projects of the Institute of Social Sciences University of Lisbon (ICS-UL), namely at Portuguese Permanent Youth Observatory. He also participated in the European Erasmus program at the University of Warwick, and developed a Short Term Scientific Mission at the London School of Economics (LSE) and in international networks such as the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) actions, namely the COST-298 action.
The main research topics are within 2 major areas: media and culture, alongside social research methods.
Some of the interest areas focus in new media, music, digital piracy, audiences, participatory culture, fandom, street art and online dating.
He received the "Paquete de Oliveira Award - National Excellence Award for PhD Theses at Portuguese Universities" in 2017.

Maria João Lima has a PhD in Sociology by Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon. She holds a Master's degree in Ethnomusicology and a Bachelor's degree in Musicology (FCSH-UNL). She was a research assistant at INET-MD-Instituto de Etnomusicologia Música e Dança (1995-2000) and at OAC - Cultural Activities Observatory (2001-2013). Her research is mainly focused on cultural policies, cultural audiences and cultural expressive practices. She is currently part of the research team of the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (https://www.opac.cies.iscte-iul.pt/).
Ph.D. candidate in communication sciences. His research interests include studies sociology, communication sciences and the TV, radio, press and Internet studies sector. Works as a member of the Observatorio (OBS*) journal since 2015. Prior to begining his doctoral studies, he worked as research assistant at ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon and at the Media Observatory in Lisbon. With his teams he published over 50 research reports in the field of media and communication studies, 3 books, 3 book chapters. He was also awarded with five academic merit-based scholarships during the conclusion of his bachelor degree in Sociology and Strategic Planning

Sandro Mendonça is Professor at the Department of Economics, ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute. He is also Invited Professor at ISEG - University of Lisbon and Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Economics of the University of Insubria, Italy.
He is a German Marshall Fund Fellow since 2012. He was a visiting scholar of King’s College, London, in the Fall of 2012. In 2015 he was nominated “European Young Leader” by the Friends of Europe Foundation. He is faculty of SPRU, the University of Sussex, since 2016. Since 2012 he teaches and supervises at the doctoral programs of the Southern Medical University (Guanghzou) and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (Chengdu). He served as Director of the Economics undergraduate programme at ISCTE Business School (AACSB accredited) during two terms.
He was Scientific Manager of “Science and Society” at CYTED (the Ibero-American program for science and technology, www.cyted.org) from 2014 to 2018, and remained an advisor to the Secretary General. He cooperated with CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Rights Office). He was deputy member of the Management Committee of OceanGov (European Network on “Ocean Governance for Sustainability”, sponsored by the European Science Foundation).
His research and consultancy work mostly focus on innovation and industrial policy. He is also active in the fields of strategic foresight and conflict research.
His research is cited in a number of scientific papers as well as academic textbooks, professional handbooks and official reports by international organisations, including the European Commission, the OCDE, several UN agencies and programmes (such as WIPO, UNIDO, IPCC), etc.
He holds editorial positions in the following academic journals: Foresight and STI Governance, Frontiers in Sustainability, Public Policy Portuguese Journal, and OBS*.
He has consulted extensively and internationally, both with the public sector and the industrial sector, as well as the “third sector”, both in his country and abroad.
He has maintained a civic activity for a long time, most visibly in the media. In the past he held opinion columns in magazines like Revista Macau (the Macau-based magazine on Oriental and Portuguese-speaking affairs) and UP (the on-board magazine of TAP, the Portuguese heritage carrier). In terms of newspapers, he held columns in a number of newspapers: Público (Portugal’s reference daily newspaper), Diário de Notícias (the oldest mainstream daily paper) and Diário Económico (a leading Portuguese business newspaper, which survives today as Jornal Económico). He has appeared frequently as commentator at CNN Portugal, News Now, RTP3, SIC-N and TVI-24, cable news networks. At the time of his nomination for ANACOM he held a weekly column in Expresso (Portugal’s leading weekly newspaper). On X-twitter he is @sfm_reg and can also be found on Linkedin.
He was Executive Board Member (2018-2023) of ANACOM, the Portuguese communications authority with responsabilities for spectrum strategy and manangement, telecoms and postal supervision, submarine cables and outer-space economic activities, and emerging cybersecurity and digital economy challenges.
Sandro Mendonça is member of the advisory board of the monitoring unit of the Portuguese official national authority for cybersecurity (CNCS). He is a member of the governing body of Ceadi, the intelligence council of the Brazilian telecommunications regulator (Anatel). He is an analyst with the mexican-based DPL News, a media and research agency focusing on digital & telecoms in Latin America. He is a columnist at Macau Business magazine and at Jornal Económico. He coordinated the study "The Futures of Big Tech in Europe" (published in 2024) for DG Research, European Commission. And he is a Fellow Economist for DG Grow, European Commission (for the year 2024).
Tiago Lapa is an assistant professor and researcher at CIES-IUL, in the area of ¿¿communication, in the Department of Sociology of the School of Sociology and Public Policy of ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Coordinates and / or teaches curricular units in the fields of digital sociology, communication and online methods of inquiry. He has around 10 years of experience in academic teaching in the area of ¿¿sociology and communication sciences, having taught curricular units such as Sociology of Communication, Communication Theories and Communication Skills at ISCTE-IUL, but also in other national institutions, such as the ESECS of Polytechnic Institute of Leiria and the European University - Portugal. It is also in this area that he has carried out supervisions of master and doctoral studies, collaborated as a reviewer in publications and participates in COST and Erasmus + programs and in international scientific networks such as the World Internet Project and the European Media Coach Initiative, related to Internet studies , the digital divide and new media literacy. He also belongs to the advisory council of the Safe Internet Center of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His scientific work has been published in the form of books, chapters and articles in indexed journals of international circulation.
