Esta dissertação procura investigar o surgimento da ecomuseologia nos Açores, estudando o caso do Ecomuseu do Corvo, refletindo-se sobre as particularidades do seu surgimento e sobre o papel dinamizador deste ecomuseu na comunidade da Vila do Corvo, tanto a nível social, cultural e económico. Começa-se por analisar o surgimento da Nova Museologia e dos ecomuseus pelo mundo, tendo em conta vários casos de museus em Portugal e nos Açores que se inspiram nessas experiências. Neste âmbito, explora-se o caso do Ecomuseu de São Jorge, um testemunho de um projeto ecomuseológico que contou com a participação da comunidade local. Analisando-se o caso deste ecomuseu do Corvo, e tendo por base entrevistas à sua atual equipa, nota-se que esta estrutura museológica tem sido um contributo para o desenvolvimento da ilha do Corvo. Não obstante, apesar da participação e entusiasmo da população, o facto de não ter nascido de uma vontade da comunidade, tem gerado adversidades no cumprimento dos objetivos iniciais do ecomuseu.

This dissertation seeks to investigate the emergence of ecomuseology in the Azores, studying the case of the Ecomuseum of Corvo, by reflecting on the particularities of its emergence and on the dynamic role of this ecomuseum in the community of Vila do Corvo, both at a social, cultural, and economic level. It begins by analysing the emergence of New Museology and ecomuseums around the world, taking into account several cases of museums in Portugal and in the Azores that draw inspiration from these experiences. In this context, the case of the São Jorge Ecomuseum is explored, a testimony of an ecomuseological project that had the participation of the local community. Investigating the case of Corvo’s ecomuseum, and based on interviews with its current team, it is recognized that this museological structure has been a contribution to the development of the island of Corvo. However, despite the participation and enthusiasm of the population, the fact that it was not born out of the will of the community, has generated adversity in achieving the initial objectives of the ecomuseum.
