São Pedro do Sul é conhecido como Capital do Termalismo, mas tem importantes atributos ambientais e socioculturais que aparentam não ser turisticamente divulgados e que poderiam favorecer este destino e contribuir para o desenvolvimento local: riqueza em fauna e flora endémica; certificações europeias e mundiais de diferentes sítios naturais; fenómenos geológicos raríssimos no mundo; águas mais límpidas da Europa e montanhas com variadas rotas, onde se escondem aldeias com histórias e marcos edificados de há mais de 2000 anos. Associações, pequenas empresas e movimentos locais, dirigidos por cidadãos têm, há cerca de 3 décadas, impulsionado a criação de documentos, de oferta turística e de parcerias no setor do ecoturismo, turismo de natureza, aventura e rural na região. Este ano a Câmara Municipal lançou um Plano Estratégico de Desenvolvimento do Turismo: S. Pedro do Sul 2030 que reconhece a importância destes setores e apresenta propostas de diversificação e de alargamento da oferta turística existente. Para responder aos desafios do ecoturismo e do turismo rural na região, investiga-se como é que os hotéis locais assumem o seu compromisso de sustentabilidade. Selecionaram-se 2 hotéis diferentes, o INATEL Palace, hotel de cadeia e o Hotel Vouga, hotel independente, para identificar, comparar e apresentar sugestões de boas práticas de sustentabilidade. Experienciaram-se e analisaram-se percursos pedestres em contexto rural, de forma a compreender o seu papel para uma aprendizagem significativa e atitude responsável perante as pessoas e a natureza. Tratou-se de um estudo em que se assumiu o papel de investigadora, turista e hóspede.

São Pedro do Sul is known as the Capital of Thermalism, but it has important environmental and socio-cultural attributes that don't seem to be publicized for tourism purposes and which could benefit this destination and contribute to local development: abundant endemic fauna and flora; European and world certifications for different natural sites; geological phenomena that are very rare in the world; the clearest European waters and mountains with varied routes, hiding villages with histories and landmarks built more than 2000 years ago. Associations, small businesses and local movements run by citizens have, for around 3 decades, been pushing forward the creation of documents, tourism offers and partnerships in the ecotourism, nature, adventure and rural tourism sectors in the region. This year, the Town Council launched a Strategic Tourism Development Plan: S. Pedro do Sul 2030, which recognizes the importance of these sectors and presents ideas for diversifying and expanding the existing tourism offer. In order to respond to the challenges of ecotourism and rural tourism in the region, local hotels were investigated on how they assume their commitment to sustainability. 2 different hotels were selected, the INATEL Palace, a chain hotel, and the Hotel Vouga, an independent hotel, to identify, compare and present suggestions for successful sustainability practices. Walking routes in a rural context were experienced and analyzed in order to understand their role in meaningful learning and a responsible attitude towards people and nature. This was a study in which the role of researcher, tourist and guest was assumed.
