Compreender as atitudes face ao abandono de animais de companhia é fulcral para o impedimento da perpetuação do abandono. O tema do abandono de animais de companhia tem vindo a ganhar terreno no que concerne a investigação, e a presente dissertação detém como objetivo compreender se os motivos para o abandono de animais de companhia apresentam uma relação significativa para com as atitudes face ao abandono, qual o papel da relação humano-animal de companhia nesta relação, e analisar se a Pandemia COVID-19 se apresenta como influenciadora da mesma. Para a presente dissertação, foi administrado um questionário com quatro escalas, sendo essas a escala das atitudes face ao abandono animal, escala dos motivos para o abandono animal, escala da qualidade da relação humano-animal de companhia, e, por fim, a escala das consequências da Pandemia Covid-19. Após o tratamento dos dados obtidos (n=600) foi possível analisar que os motivos face ao abandono de animais de companhia não apresentam uma relação significativa no que concerne as atitudes face ao abandono, porém, que esta relação é explicada pela qualidade da relação humano-animal de companhia, uma vez que o aumento de motivos para o abandono animal se relaciona de forma negativa para com a relação humano animal de companhia, traduzindo-se em atitudes positivas face ao abandono de animais de companhia, e que esta relação é intensificada por pessoas que tenham sido mais afetadas pela pandemia COVID-19. Limitações e oportunidades de investigação futuras são também discutidas na presente dissertação.

Understanding attitudes towards the relinquishment of pets is fundamental to preventing the perpetuation of relinquishment. The topic of relinquishment of companion animals has been gaining ground in the research world, and the present dissertation aims to understand whether the reasons for abandoning companion animals present a significant relationship with attitudes towards relinquishment, what the role of the human-companion animal relationship is in this relationship and analyze whether the COVID-19 Pandemic has influence over it. For this dissertation, a questionnaire with four scales was applied, these being the scale of attitudes towards animal relinquishment, scale of reasons for animal relinquishment, scale of the quality of the human-pet relationship, and, finally, the scale of the consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic. After processing the data obtained (n=600), it was possible to analyze that the reasons for abandoning pets do not present a significant relationship when it comes to attitudes towards relinquishment, however, this relationship is explained by the quality of the human - companion animal relationship, which means that the increase in reasons for animal abandonment is negatively related to the human-pet animal relationship, translating into positive attitudes towards the relinquishment of pet animals, and that this relationship is intensified by people who have been most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Limitations and opportunities for future research are also discussed in this dissertation.
