O estudo que se apresenta constitui uma abordagem ao “Envelhecimento e Adequação das Políticas Sociais na Promoção da Segurança das Pessoas Idosas em Meio Rural” tendo como principal objetivo compreender, pela perspetiva dos Assistentes Sociais e pessoas idosas, se as políticas sociais são promotoras de segurança (social, económica e física) na velhice. Neste sentido, foi utilizada a Metodologia Qualitativa e aplicada a entrevista semiestruturada como instrumento de recolha de dados que permitiu analisar, para além da adequação das políticas, outros fatores como o processo de envelhecimento, as especificidades do meio rural, as necessidades dos idosos e as redes de suporte formal e informal em meio rural. Assim, concluímos que o meio rural apresenta várias políticas sociais que garantem proteção às pessoas idosas em vários aspetos da vida quotidiana, umas de natureza nacional asseguradas por organismos descentralizados do estado e outras promovidas pelo Município, não invalidando, no entanto, a necessidade de um maior investimento em políticas públicas que tenham em atenção as especificidades desta região, e os diversos fatores de condicionam a qualidade de vida dos mais velhos.

This study is an approach to “Ageing and the Adequacy of Social Policies on Promoting the Security of Elderly People in Rural Areas" with the main objective of understanding, from the perspective of social workers and elderly people, whether social policies are promoting security (social, economic and physical) in old age. In this sense, Qualitative Methodology was used with the application of the semi-structured interview as a data collection tool that allowed analyzing, in addition to the adequacy of the policies, other factors such as the aging process, the specificities of the rural environent, the needs of the elderly and the formal and informal support networks in rural areas. Thus, we conclude that the rural environment features several social policies that guarantee the protection of the elderly in several aspects of daily life, some of a national nature ensured by decentralised state agencies and others promoted by the Municipality, nevertheless not overruling the need for greater investment in public policies that take into consideration the specificities of this region, and the various issues that condition the quality of life of the Elders.
