Silva Leal Award

2025 EDITION

APPLICATIONS: from 15 September to 31 October 2025

In honour of Professor António da Silva Leal, who distinguished himself both as an academic and as a politician in the defence and development of policies grounded in the principle of solidarity among all citizens, Iscte and the Secretary of State for Social Security established the Silva Leal Award.

With a monetary value of €2,500 and awarded annually, the prize aims to recognise Iscte students who have distinguished themselves through the production of work relevant to the study of policies and practices in the fields of social security, solidarity, and the social economy.

Eligible submissions include doctoral theses, master’s dissertations or project work, and final degree projects prepared individually by Iscte students, completed and assessed during the year 2024 within undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programmes, focusing on policies and practices in the fields of social security, solidarity, and the social economy.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are assessed according to the following criteria:

• Relevance to the themes of the Award;
• Scientific merit;
• Relevance for the social sectors concerned;
• Relevance for governmental stakeholders;
• Contribution to a culture of debate on the Award’s themes.

Each criterion is graded as follows 1(Acceptable), 2(Good, 3(Very Good).
