Sofia Ferro Santos is a PhD Candidate at ISCTE-IUL, in Communication Sciences researching on the topic "Political Communication in Twitter: Filter Bubbles or public communication channel".
She is also collaborating on the European Project EUMEPLAT - European Media Platforms: assessing positive and negative externalities for European Culture (Funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020; Grant No 101004488) and have worked before on IBERIFIER - Iberian Media Research and Fact-Checking (Funded by European Comission in the scope of CEF-TC-2020-2 - European Digital Media Observatory; Reference 2020-EU-IA-0252)
Previously, Sofia has worked in strategic advisory for Hiscox at an European level and for everis (currently NTT Data).
Sofia Ferro Santos holds an International Master in Management degree from Nova School of Business & Economics and a Post-graduation degree in Advisory in Communication and Politics from ISCTE-IUL.
Gustavo Cardoso is Full Professor of Sociology of Communication at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and a researcher at CIES. He is also an associate researcher at CADIS (Center d'Analyze et d'Interventions Sociologiques) in Paris and Director of OberCom - Observatório dos Meios de Comunicação Social in Lisbon. He is currently the director of the PhD in Communication Sciences and of three post-graduate programs in Communication at ISCTE-IUL, namely the Post-Graduate program in Journalism, the Post-Graduate program in Factchecking and disinformation, and the Post-Graduate program in Communication and Politics.
From 1996 to 2006, he was advisor to the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, for Information Society and Telecommunications policy. From 2006-2012, he was non-executive Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese news agency Lusa. In 2006 he was awarded the degree of "Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique" for relevant services rendered to Portugal. In 2009 he was elected as Young Global Leader of the WEF and in 2018 he was proposed to be a member of the Academia Europaea where he holds the position of member of the Cinema, media and visual studies section. He has a degree in Business Organization and Management, a Master in European Studies and a PhD in Sociology of Communication. He also holds a specialization in "Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century" from the Harvard Kennedy School.
I am an Assistant Professor in Political Science at the University Institute of Lisbon (Iscte-IUL) and Integrated Researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (Cies-IUL). Since 2020, I have been the co-coordinator of the Research Group on 'Politics and Citizenship' and the Deputy-Director of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation (both at CIES-Iscte). I was co-charing the Social Movements RN of the Council of European Studies, being now a board-member. Between 2018 and 2022 I coordinated the FCT funded research project HOPES - HOusing PErspectives and Struggles. Futures of housing movements, policies and dynamics in Lisbon and beyond (230,000 €). My main areas of interest are social movements, right to the city and to housing, gentrification and tourism, digital activism and participation, protest and politics, democratization. I have published articles in journals including Housing Studies, Journal of Common Market Studies, Partecipazione e Conflitto, Current Sociology, Mobilization, Social Movement Studies, Journal of Contemporary Religion, West European Politics, Estudos Ibero-Americanos, Democratization, Cultures et Conflits, Análise Social, Storia e Problemi Contemporanei, Historein. My monography 'The Revolution before the Revolution' and the book I co-edited with Olivier Fillieule 'Social Movement Studies in Europe' were both published in 2016 by Berghahn. I have been teaching courses on social movements, democracy, citizenship, political culture and digital era.
Jorge Vieira is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology of the School of Sociology and Public Policies at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
He is a member of the board of directors of the Masters in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies and of LIA Iscte - Laboratory for Innovation at the Academy.
He holds a PhD in Sociology and a Master's Degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technology from ISCTE-IUL.
He teaches and tutors in the masters programs of Communication, Culture and Information Technologies; Entrepreneurship and Culture Studies, as well as in the graduation in Sociology and in the PhD in Communication Sciences.
In addition to teaching he develops research at the Center for Research and Studies of Sociology - CIES-IUL as an integrated PHD Researcher and at OberCom - Observatório da Comunicação.
He was already a researcher in projects of the Institute of Social Sciences University of Lisbon (ICS-UL), namely at Portuguese Permanent Youth Observatory. He also participated in the European Erasmus program at the University of Warwick, and developed a Short Term Scientific Mission at the London School of Economics (LSE) and in international networks such as the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) actions, namely the COST-298 action.
The main research topics are within 2 major areas: media and culture, alongside social research methods.
Some of the interest areas focus in new media, music, digital piracy, audiences, participatory culture, fandom, street art and online dating.
He received the "Paquete de Oliveira Award - National Excellence Award for PhD Theses at Portuguese Universities" in 2017.
Maria João Lima has a PhD in Sociology by Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon. She holds a Master's degree in Ethnomusicology and a Bachelor's degree in Musicology (FCSH-UNL). She was a research assistant at INET-MD-Instituto de Etnomusicologia Música e Dança (1995-2000) and at OAC - Cultural Activities Observatory (2001-2013). Her research is mainly focused on cultural policies, cultural audiences and cultural expressive practices. She is currently part of the research team of the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (https://www.opac.cies.iscte-iul.pt/).
Rita Sepúlveda is a postdoctoral researcher at ICNOVA - Instituto da Comunicação da NOVA with the project RelationApp: - Status: in a relationship with apps. Apps dynamics in the context of romantic relationship management. She holds a Communication Sciences PhD from ISCTE (2021). Rita researches on collective and dynamic expressions in digital environments. Her work has focused on the transformation of intimacy in the context of the appropriation of digital platforms. She is an associate researcher at Cies (Iscte-Iul), collaborating on EUMEPLAT - European Media Platforms: assessing positive and negative externalities for European Culture (Funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020; Grant No 101004488) and coordinating the DatingLab project (Cies-Iscte). Since 2019 she has been lecturing in postgraduate courses on methodologies subjects with a particular focus on social media platforms. She is member of Social Media Research Techniques group (iNOVAMedia Lab) and MediaLab Cies-Iscte.
Associate Professor with Habilitation at Iscte-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Director of the Master in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies and deputy director of Sociology Department. Researcher at CIES-Iscte, currently develops research in the areas of "Communication, Information Technologies and Health", "Health Literacy" and "Digital Health". ERASMUS coordinator of the Sociology Department. Associated Editor of the Observatório magazine (OBS * - http://obs.obercom.pt/index.php/obs), member of the Scientific Committee of Edicciones-InCom-UAB and of the Editorial Committee of Revista de Comunicación y Salud (https://www.revistadecomunicacionysalud.es/index.php/rcys). Author of several books and articles in the areas of Health and Communication, Network Communication and Youth and Media in Portugal.
Tiago Lapa is an assistant professor and researcher at CIES-IUL, in the area of ¿¿communication, in the Department of Sociology of the School of Sociology and Public Policy of ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Coordinates and / or teaches curricular units in the fields of digital sociology, communication and online methods of inquiry. He has around 10 years of experience in academic teaching in the area of ¿¿sociology and communication sciences, having taught curricular units such as Sociology of Communication, Communication Theories and Communication Skills at ISCTE-IUL, but also in other national institutions, such as the ESECS of Polytechnic Institute of Leiria and the European University - Portugal. It is also in this area that he has carried out supervisions of master and doctoral studies, collaborated as a reviewer in publications and participates in COST and Erasmus + programs and in international scientific networks such as the World Internet Project and the European Media Coach Initiative, related to Internet studies , the digital divide and new media literacy. He also belongs to the advisory council of the Safe Internet Center of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His scientific work has been published in the form of books, chapters and articles in indexed journals of international circulation.
