Data Analysis for the Social Sciences
At the end of this learning unit's term, the student must be able to:
1.Understand the basic concepts of statistics and the importance of statistical knowledge in social research.
2.Compute and understand generic indicators of measurement;
3.Construct a data base in Excel;
4.Use and interpret a set of statistical tools in the field of descriptive statistics.
5.Analyze and interpret observations over time.
6.Develop critical evaluation skills, selection and interpretation of the various indicators and techniques.
7.Use appropriate programs for the social sciences: Excel, construction of tables and graphs, compute the statistical tools lectured.

The minimum grade of each exercise is 7.
If the final grade is less than 10,students will be evaluated in the final examination.
Examination: 2 components,written exam(60%) and Excel exam(40%).
Minimum grade of each component is 7.
Students may be excused of the written test or assignment with Excel if the result of this component in evaluation was positive. This condition doesn't apply in grade improvement.

Early Modern Portugal
LO1. To acquire a comprehensive knowledge about the history of Portugal in the period 1415-1640.
LO2. To identify and understand the main changes and continuities of this historical period.
LO3. To develop the ability to raise hypotheses and deepening historical issues.
LO4. To develop reading and textual analysis skills.
LO5. To develop creative communication skills.
PC1. The chronological, spatial and problematic framework.
PC2. Portugal in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (Power and powers; Society; The economy; Foreign policy and international relations; Science, knowledge and culture).
PC3. The role of overseas expansion in the history of mainland Portugal.
The student has 2 different options:
(1) The PERMANENT ASSESSMENT scheme, besides requiring a minimum 66% attendance, relies on three main elements: AV1. Short written questionnaire covering specifically three texts (worth 30% of the final grade). AV2. A written questionnaire covering the entire program (worth 60%). AV3. Regular follow-up of class activities (worth 10%).
(2) The FINAL EXAMINATION is a single written questionnaire (AV4), covering the entire program.

PC4- Archives and archivistic: an historical approach. Concepts of archive and archive document. Mission and objectives of the archives. Current, intermediate and historical archives. Consultability of archive documents. The archive organization .The archive Portuguese system
PC5 - Archival description. An introduction.
PC6- Image archives and Digital archives.
PC7- Libraries and Librarianship. Librarian typologies. The public library. Library organization.
PC8- The search for information on historical archives and in libraries.
Individual study, based on the bibliography of work is guided and complemented by the completion of lectures.
The development of specific skills related to information search is developed through the completion of work, preferably in small groups.

Learning outcomes are focused on knowledge of demographic object (LO1), main sources of demographic data (LO2) definition, demonstration and application of key concepts and tools of demographic analysis (LO3), improve the ability to analyze population structure and dynamics (LO4) and understand different demographic phenomena (LO5). There are two options for evaluation:
a) Continuous Evaluation: the final grade is based on one individual test (60% of final grade), group work throughout the semester (30% of final grade), assiduity and individual work during the semester (10% of final grade).
b) Evaluation by final exam: the final grade is based only in the individual exam (100%).

CP3.1. Ascent and fall of the gold standard.
CP3.2. The system of Bretton Woods and the paper of the IMF

CP4. International economic development: retrospective
The individual study, having for base the bibliography of work, will be oriented and supported through the achievement of 13 theoretical lessons with the duration of 20 hours. To this component corresponds a written frequency test which has a weight of 65% in the final assessment.
The remaining 35% result from the assessment of work groups.Final assessment is the weighted average obtained from 35% from the work groups and 65% from the written test.

Colonization and Decolonization: XIX-XX Centuries
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
LO1 - Describe the basic stages in the history of colonialism in the past two centuries.
LO2 - Identify and assess the major explanations for the phenomenon of European settlement started in mid-nineteenth century.
LO3 - Compare between the two major phases in the process of independence of former colonies: the American Wave and the Global Decolonisation following World War II.
LO4 - Apply acquired knowledge in the analysis of historical sources.
LO5 - Describe and take an informed position on the debates evolving around the meanings of colonialism.
LO1 - Dealing with colonialism in historiography.
LO2 - Basic concepts: colony, colonialism, empire, anti-colonial nationalism, decolonisation, neo-colonialism, the post-colonial condition.
LO3 - The independence on the American continent (the 1st wave of decolonisation)
LO4 - European colonialism in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. The Scramble for Africa
LO5 - European colonialism between 1st and 2nd World Wars
LO6 - The third Portuguese Colonial Empire
LO7 - The global decolonisation after 1945 (the 2nd wave of decolonisation)

This Curricular Unit can be assessed by means of a periodic assessment or a final exam. Periodic assessment is based on: PARTICIPATION IN CLASSES (50%) and a final TEST (50%). Participation in classes consists of (1) a group presentation of a text and (2) five individual responses to questionnaires launched at the end of each class. TOTAL SCORE: Test = from 0 to 50 points. Group Oral Presentation = 0 to 30 points. Individual answers to the Questionnaires = from 0 to 20 points.

Cultures of Protest in the XX Century Europe
To know and understand some of the facets taken by protest cultures in twentieth-century Europe: protestintellectual, political, artistic, literary, feminist and student. Will be studied concrete situations of protest, the quaisserão contextualised to an understanding of the fundamentals, motivation, social and political impact and meanings involved in each protest.

5.The feminist protest. The example of Simone de Beauvoir
6.The dissident protest in the USSR

The lectures will support the study of individual recommended readings included in the bibliography.
In practical classes, students present their work, which will be the subject of comment and debate in class.

The evaluation consists of the following elements:
(a) assiduity and class participation, (b) oral presentation, with written abstract (c) test. The rate in the final classification is as follows: attendance and participation: 10%; oral presentation: 40%; test: 50%.

PC3- The debate about globalization. The reduction of poverty in the world. The decline in middle class expectations in rich countries.
PC4- Democracies, anocracies and autocracies: comparative evolution of regimes in the world. The 1989-91 turning point or the falacious "end of history". The New Nationalism and Populism's challenges to democracies.
PC5- The European Union. The government, the treaties and the enlargements. The creation of Economic and Monetary Union: challenges and problems. Europeanists, Eurocritics and Eurosceptics.
Two modalities:
1. Continuous assessment: individual or group work written up to 8 pages (50%); test of attendance without consultation (50%).
