The BSc in Modern and Contemporary History is three years long and confers 180 ECTS credits, which are divided into 144 credits in compulsory curricular units and 66 credits in electives, of which 30 should be Interdisciplinary and 6 should be in Transferable Skills.

Students may be excused of the written test or assignment with Excel if the result of this component in evaluation was positive. This condition doesn't apply in grade improvement.
All assessment moments will be carried out without consulting handouts, books or other materials, and the use of graphic calculators or mobile phones is not permitted; the form will be provided by the teacher at the time of the assessment.

Early Modern Portugal
LO1. To acquire a comprehensive knowledge about the history of Portugal in the period 1415-1640.
LO2. To identify and understand the main changes and continuities of this historical period.

PC1. The chronological, spatial and problematic framework.
PC2. Portugal in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (Power and powers; Society; The economy; Foreign policy and international relations; Science, knowledge and culture).
PC3. The role of overseas expansion in the history of mainland Portugal.
The student has 2 different options:
(1) The ASSESSMENT THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER, besides requiring a minimum 66% attendance, relies on three main elements: AV1. Written commentary on texts (worth 30% of the final grade). AV2. A written questionnaire covering the entire program (worth 60%). AV3. Regular follow-up of class activities (worth 10%).
(2) The FINAL EXAMINATION is a single written questionnaire (AV4), covering the entire program.

PC4- Archives and archivistic: an historical approach. Concepts of archive and archive document. Mission and objectives of the archives. Current, intermediate and historical archives. Consultability of archive documents. The archive organization .The archive Portuguese system
PC5 - Archival description. An introduction.
PC6- Image archives and Digital archives.
PC7- Libraries and Librarianship. Librarian typologies. The public library. Library organization.
PC8- The search for information on historical archives and in libraries.
Individual study, based on the bibliography of work is guided and complemented by the completion of lectures.
The development of specific skills related to information search is developed through the completion of work, preferably in small groups.

Introduction to Demography
Learning outcomes are focused on knowledge of demographic object (LO1), main sources of demographic data (LO2) definition, demonstration and application of key concepts and tools of demographic analysis (LO3), improve the ability to analyze population structure and dynamics (LO4) and understand different demographic phenomena (LO5). The aim is also to stimulate the ability of articulation and application of acquired knowledge (LO6).

The assessment system for the course is twofold:
1. Assessment throughout the semester
Test: knowledge of the content covered throughout the semester is assessed in an individual test, to be scheduled for the 1st assessment period, and the mark obtained represents 50% of the final grade.
Work carried out throughout the semester (in groups and/or individually): Practical work carried out in class, throughout the semester, to consolidate the content covered; and a final written thematic work, with oral presentation, developed throughout the semester, with tutorial accompaniment. Overall, the work component accounts for 50% of the final mark.
2. Assessment by Exam
Final exam: This represents 100% of the final grade for students who choose this option or who do not meet the minimum assessment criteria throughout the semester. The final exam will cover all the syllabus content taught during the semester.
Note: There is no minimum attendance requirement for assessment throughout the semester.

1. Ancien Régime in Portugal. French invasions and english ocupation. The rupture of the Empire and its consequences.
2. Revolution and counterrevolution. Liberals and "miguelistas".
3. Constitutional issues: politics and citizenship. "Cartistas" and "setembristas". "Cabralistas". "Cabralistas".
4. Liberalism, public space and opinion
5. Territory and men.
6. From Brasil to Africa. The slave trade and its abolition.
7. Economica changes; the reform of the status of the land; industry; trade and financial aspects.
8. Urban and rural social tensions.
According to the General Regulation for Assessment of Knowledge and Skills of Iscte, the assessmente can be perfomed by two ways: assessment throughout the semester and assessment by final exam.
In the first period, the Assessment throughout the semester consist of:
- An oral exposition about a primary source (40%);
- A test, acompained by a cronology given by the teacher (60%).
There will be a final exam for the students who choose it.
In the second period, there is an assessment by final exam.

LO5: To explain the creation of the Warsaw Pact and to evaluate the importance of the events in Hungary, 1956, and in Czechoslovakia, 1968;
LO6: To analyze the meaning of the Berlin and Cuban crises;
LO7: To explain the dismantlement of European colonial empires in the international context of the Cold War;
LO8: To analyze the meaning and consequences of the Vietnam War;
LO9: To identify the causes, consequences and main mechanisms of rhe policy of Détente;
LO10: To identify the causes of the end of the Cold War.

CP2.3. Industrialization and the technological revolution of transport systems and communications. The multifunctional firm and to internationalization of capital.
CP2.4. The underdeveloped Countries and the New industrialized countries.
CP2.5. The period after the Second World War and the european prosperity.
CP3. The international financial system
CP3.1. Ascent and fall of the gold standard.
CP3.2. The system of Bretton Woods and the paper of the IMF
CP3.3. The floating exchanges and the paper of the dollar.

CP4. International economic development: retrospective
The individual study, having for base the bibliography of work, will be oriented and supported through the achievement of 13 theoretical lessons with the duration of 20 hours. To this component corresponds a written frequency test which has a weight of 65% in the final assessment.
The remaining 35% result from the assessment of work groups.Final assessment is the weighted average obtained from 35% from the work groups and 65% from the written test.

Colonization and Decolonization: XIX-XX Centuries
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
LO1 - Describe the basic stages in the history of colonialism in the past two centuries.
LO2 - Identify and assess the major explanations for the phenomenon of European settlement started in mid-nineteenth century.
LO3 - Compare between the two major phases in the process of independence of former colonies: the American Wave and the Global Decolonisation following World War II.
LO4 - Evaluate colonialism imposed by non-European states.
LO5 - Understand the legacies of colonialism in colonized countries.
LO6 - Apply acquired knowledge in the analysis of historical sources.
LO7 - Describe and take an informed position on the debates evolving around the meanings of colonialism.
PC1 - Historiography and essential concepts of colonialism.
PC2 - The independence on the American continent (the 1st wave of decolonisation).
PC3 - European colonialism in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. The Scramble for Africa
PC4 - European colonialism between 1st and 2nd World Wars
PC5 - The global decolonisation after 1945 (the 2nd wave of decolonisation).
PC6 - Portugal: empire and decolonisation.
PC7 - Colonialisms outside Europe.
PC8 - Independence and post-colonialism.
This Curricular Unit can be assessed by means of a assessment throughout the semester or a final exam.
Assessment throughout the semester consists of: individual written work interpreting a historical source (35%), oral and written presentation of a group work (35%) and a test with consultation (30%). The final exam is 100%.

Cultures of Protest in the XX Century Europe
To know and understand some of the facets taken by protest cultures in twentieth-century Europe: protestintellectual, political, artistic, literary, feminist and student. Will be studied concrete situations of protest, the quaisserão contextualised to an understanding of the fundamentals, motivation, social and political impact and meanings involved in each protest.

The lectures will support the study of individual recommended readings included in the bibliography.
In practical classes, students present their work, which will be the subject of comment and debate in class.

The evaluation consists of the following elements:
(a) assiduity and class participation, (b) oral presentation, with written abstract (c) test. The rate in the final classification is as follows: attendance and participation: 10%; oral presentation: 40%; test: 50%.

Intership in Modern and Contemporary History
The learning objectives of the UC are:
OA1 - to provide the possibility of applying in practice the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during the course carried out so far.
OA2 - to enable students to come into contact with the labour market and thus help them to identify future career goals.
OA3 - to prepare students for future employment situations, enabling them to develop and apply the skills and knowledge acquired.
S 1 - Organisation of the student placement process in internship.
S 2 - Definition of the internship placement and schedule.
S 3 - Formalisation of the placement: preparation of protocol, identification of the external advisor, preparation of a work plan conjointly with the institution, definition of the internship general goals.
S 4 - Preparation to integrate the placement location: guiding sessions.
S 5 - Integration into the regular activities of the organisation, within their valence and teams.
S 6 - An internship report on the work carried out, including a characterization of the organization where the internship tool place.
S 7 - Presentation in a seminar on the activities carried out durinh the internship and critical assessment.
The evaluation will be based on two elements:
1 – Internship plan (1 – 2 pages) + final report of the internship (10-15 pages) done by the student - weight in the final assessment: 50%.
2 – Evaluation of the internship by the host entity (through the completion of a questionnaire) - weight in the final assessment: 50%.

2. Final exam. The final exam, with a written and possibly oral test, covers all of the program's material, based on the bibliography indicated by the teacher.

This UC aims to prepare the students to be capable of:
1) To caracterize the process of transition to democracy in Portugal;
2) To distinct the general lines of the transformations and stays in recent decades
3) To caracterize the political and economical evolution and the major social and cultural changes in Portugal during the last decades;
4) To have the perception of the social function of History.

According to the General Regulation for Assessment of Knowledge and Skills of Iscte, the assessmente can be perfomed by two ways: Assessment throughout the semester and Assesment assessment by final exam.
In the first period, The Assessment throughout the semester consists of 2 elements:.
. One element is as oral presentation of a historical source. Worth 40%.
. Another element is a written test . Worth 60%.
Alternatively, it can be done a final examination, assuming the same level of knowledge and skills.
In the second period, there is a final examination.
