Accreditations
The preferred participants in the master's in Social Work are students who have concluded the 1st cycle of education (undergraduate), as well as professionals, technicians and decision-makers operating in the scope of social work, either at the levels of central, regional and local administration or in the third sector, in private organisations of social solidarity or non-governmental organisations.
Students who obtain approval in all the 60 credit units (ECTS) of this program's first year will be attributed the Second Cycle Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work.

Crime and Society
LO1- To demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding the approach to crime, social responses and the public policies outlined.
LO2- To understand the complexity of the social construction of crime in contemporary societies and the processes of interaction with social contexts defined as related to crime and insecurity.
LO3- Define concepts and theoretical frameworks relating to the analysis of the contexts of crime and social responses to crime.
LO4- To develop competences for applied approaches, namely in the field of crime prevention and social reintegration of the delinquent.
LO5- To analyse the multiplicity of responses to the problem of crime and its actors, demonstrating the ability to outline specific intervention plans in the area of crime.
PC1- The conceptions of crime: historical perspectives.
PC2- Analysing crime: concepts and theoretical and multidisciplinary perspectives. Criminological currents.
PC3- The social construction of crime in contemporary society
Legal frameworks, criminal legislation and security models
Social perceptions and representations of crime: crime statistics and mass media
PC4- Contexts, characterization and social dimensions of crime.
Marginality, social exclusion and crime.
Delinquents, spaces, means and victims.
Forms of crime: from petty crime to international organized crime.
PC5- Crime control and prevention.
Welfare policies and crime prevention and combat
Institutions of crime repression (police, prisons).
PC6- Strategies and intervention models in vulnerable social contexts
Prevention and intervention programs.
Interdisciplinary intervention in prison, social reintegration and community contexts.
Two modes:
1. Periodic assessment: Written questionnaire (50%) and individual work with group presentation (50%).
OR
2. Final assessment. Final exam, with written and, eventually, oral tests, includes all the syllabus, based on the bibliography indicated by the professor.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
LO1. Identify the main dimensions and processes of contemporary social inequalities;
LO2. Explain theoretically and illustrate empirically the intersections of inequalities;
LO3. Connect theoretically concepts of social justice and contemporary social inequalities;
LO4. Compare social inequality in developed, emergent and least developed countries;
LO5. Analyse processes and trends of global inequalities;
LO6. Use methodologically the main indicators, measures and categorisations of inequality;
LO7. Use online databases with global inequality indicators.

S2. Theory: social inequalities in globalization context
S3. Methodology: inequality indicators, measures and categories
S4. Resources and opportunity inequalities (income, wealth, education, work)
S5. Vital and existential inequalities (life expectancy and health; gender and ethnic-racial discrimination)
S6. Intersections of inequalities and social mobility
S7. Inequalities, social justice and public policy
S8. Inequalities in Europe: integration or divergence?
S9. Inequalities in the world: cases, trends and comparisons
S10. Human development, global inequalities and climate change
Continuous evaluation*:
a) Participation in autonomous work activities (40%)
- According to the program provided at the beginning of the academic year, students are invited to read 2/3 texts per week on the contents that will be studied and discussed;
- It is foreseen that students organised in small groups (up to 4/5 elements) will dynamise a theoretical-practical class on one of the topics foreseen in the programme. The students must articulate with the professor the orientation tutoring.
b) Final written work (60%)
- The individual theoretical-empirical essay around one of the themes proposed in the programme. Its realization must integrate both the theoretical references of compulsory reading and other complementary references on the chosen theme, as well as the exploration of substantive information from different countries, allowing the deepening of the theme in a multidimensional and comparative perspective. The essay should not exceed 4,000 words of text.
Continuous evaluation presupposes obtaining at least a grade of 8 "valores" in any of the evaluation components.
Final evaluation:
- Students who opt for the final evaluation modality (at examination period) perform a theoretical-practical essay, subordinated to a theme defined in articulation with the professor, and a critical review of a text inserted in the UC programme. In this modality may be required an oral discussion, in addition to the written component.

The course evaluation, in continuous modality, is through a work group and an individual report. The final grade will be obtained using the following weighting:
- Group work - 70% of the final grade;
- Individual report - 30% of the final grade.
The course does not include a written exam. Alternatively, the evaluation can be carried out by submitting the two elements provided for in the continuous evaluation modality, presented only on an individual basis. These evaluation elements must be completely original and cannot be evaluated, in whole or in part, at any time.

At the end of the CU students should be able to:
1) recognize and use different types of methodological strategies, mastering its theoretical, methodological and technical requirements, in order to make adequate choices;
2) identify central problems in research design, from problem definition to conceptualisation, operationalization, observation and proposal writing;;
3) write a research and/or intervention project proposal.

The learning process proceeds trough theoretical-practical classes, seminar presentations and debate (which are given prevalence), tutorials and students' autonomous work.

b) Final written work: research project and/or intervention (65%).

Final assessment, consisting of a final written work: research project and/or intervention, complemented with an oral discussion, if the teacher considers necessary (100%).

The learning process proceeds trough theoretical-practical classes, seminar presentations and debate (which are given prevalence), tutorials and students' autonomous work.

Periodic evaluation, comprising the following components:
(a) Class participation and presentation of the research and/or intervention project (35%)
b) Final written work: research project and/or intervention (65%).
OR
Final assessment, consisting of a final written work: research project and/or intervention, complemented with an oral discussion, if the teacher considers necessary (100%).
The evaluation of this course does not include a final exam.

Objectives
The objectives of the Master's in Social Work are for students:
• To deepen Social Work knowledge;
• To develop scientific and theoretical-methodological skills, so as to promote the pursuit of advanced studies in Social Work;
• To apply knowledge of Social Work in the understanding of the social problems and policies of the professional intervention and organisational/institutional contexts;
• To gain understanding of the methodologies of intervention with individuals, families, groups and communities;
• To provide the development of critical, analytical and reflective thinking on intervention, within the framework of research and knowledge production in Social Work.
Thesis / Final work
This curriculum culminates in the presentation of a dissertation or project oriented towards research and the enhancement of professional practices in the scope of Social Service.
