- Identify the relevant literature and elaborate a theoretical and empirical revision

- Design a study to test the hypotheses
- Create a procedure and the materials
- Carry out the study
- Analyse and interpret the results
- Elaborate the dissertation plan
- Write the dissertation
Throughout this process students will receive important information for the theme of their dissertations and for the conduction of the process itself, as, for example, literature that is relevant for their topic and indications on the design they should use.

The dissertation will be assessed by a panel of judges in public tests, after the supervisor's approval of its conclusion and quality to be presented in public tests. Assessment will be based on the scientific merit of the study and on its theoretical and methodological adequacy.

The final score will be obtained through two evaluation elements classified on a scale from zero to twenty: i) classification contained in the evaluation form completed by the external institution at the end of the Internship; ii) evaluation of the internship report presented by the student.

- Classification attributed by the external institution and included in the evaluation form (20% of the final grade);
- Classification assigned to the internship report (80% of the final grade).

The curricular unit does not include the evaluation by examination and the evaluation elements will have to be delivered within the calendar defined by the School of Sociology and Public Policies for the corresponding academic year.

Students may choose between two assessment methods established for this curricular unit: (1) Assessment throughout the semester; (2) Assessment by examination.

Assessment throughout the semester: this assessment method comprises a Methodological Applications Pathway, consisting of three assessment components: two individual methodological exercises (35% + 35%) and one group assignment (30%).

The individual exercises take place throughout the semester and are designed to promote the mobilisation and application of the knowledge acquired across the different content blocks of the curricular unit. They may include theoretical or theoretical-practical questions, as well as methodological application tasks.

The group assignment consists of a critical analysis of two empirical studies, one intensive and one extensive, based on master's dissertations related to the scientific field of the degree programme attended by the students. The assignment must follow the structure defined by the teaching team and may be completed individually in duly justified cases.

Assessment by examination: takes place exclusively during the assessment period and covers the entire syllabus of the curricular unit. It consists of an individual written examination including theoretical, theoretical-practical and methodological application questions, designed to assess students' knowledge of the syllabus and their ability to apply social research methods.

In the first assessment period, this examination may be taken by students who choose not to undertake assessment throughout the semester. In the second assessment period, the examination may be taken by students who have not successfully completed the curricular unit in the first assessment period.

Additional oral discussion:

The teaching team may require an additional oral discussion regarding any assessment component provided for in this syllabus whenever necessary to confirm the acquisition of the knowledge and competences being assessed or to clarify discrepancies between assessment components. The additional oral discussion does not constitute an autonomous assessment component, carries no independent weighting in the final grade for the curricular unit, and serves exclusively to validate the grade awarded for the relevant assessment component. The grade previously awarded to that component is provisional until the additional oral discussion has taken place and may be confirmed or revised in accordance with the validation undertaken and the applicable assessment criteria. Students will be notified of the additional oral discussion at least 24 hours in advance, with the date and time indicated. Failure to attend, without valid justification, will make it impossible to validate the relevant assessment component, and the consequences applicable to its non-completion or withdrawal will apply.

The learning process proceeds trough theoretical-practical classes, seminar presentations and debate (which are given prevalence), tutorials and students' autonomous work.

b) Final written work: research project and/or intervention (65%).

Final assessment, consisting of a final written work: research project and/or intervention, complemented with an oral discussion, if the teacher considers necessary (100%).
