Teaching and research in Data Science is a factor that helps to establish Portugal as a country with an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. This premise was defended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, in an event that signaled the start of the teaching of Data Science at Iscte.
In the academic year of 2019/2020, Iscte offered a new undergraduate programme in Data Science, the spots of which were entirely filled in the first round of Higher Education applications, as well as a new postgraduate programme in Data Science and new classes in all the undergraduate courses. In the coming academic year, Iscte will also offer a Master’s in this area.
Manuel Heitor praised Iscte’s initiative, emphasizing that “opening new undergraduate programmes is not trivial in Portugal”, and spoke of the creation of this programme in Data Science as an “extremely inspiring and seminal” step that would enable the school “to come to stand as a model for other institutions.”
In his speech, the Minister also highlighted the importance of Data Science in such different areas as health and climate change.
According to the coordinators of this new programme, Ana Maria de Almeida and Catarina Marques, “the direct link between Iscte, the business world and public institutions will provide our graduates with an easier transition into the workforce and a better integration into the labour market.”
The Rector of Iscte, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues, emphasized that this new, pioneering offering at Iscte represents a response to the “new exigencies of the labour market, but also to the challenges of a digitalizing society”.
Various teachers and students of this new programme participated in this event.
