"Golden Gate Grand Café, um aspeto da sociabilidade funchalense", aborda um dos cafés/restaurantes mais afamados do Funchal, desde os finais do século XIX até ao presente. Tem sido local de encontro, convívio e de tertúlias das classes dominantes, assim como de frequência para os turistas. Procuro compreender as transformações urbanas e as formas da sociabilidade da elite insular, recorrendo a documentação de arquivo impresso e visual, à imprensa e a testemunhos orais. O primeiro capítulo resume aspetos fundamentais da história dos cafés/restaurantes como estabelecimentos de comércio e lazer, e à mudanças na sociabilidade desde o período oitocentista até à atualidade. O segundo capítulo incide sobre o Golden Gate: a) os modos de vida dos grupos dominantes funchalenses no século XIX, b) As transformações ocorridas ao longo do século XX e c) o período até à atualidade.

"Golden Gate Grand Café, um aspeto da sociabilidade funchalense", talks about one of the most famous cafés/restaurants in Funchal, from the end of XIX century until the present time. It has been a gathering and socializing place among the most dominant social classes as well as, very frequently, tourists. I intend to comprehend the urban transformations and the elite forms of sociability in the island, using printed and visual archive documentation, press and oral testimonies. The first chapter summarizes fundamental aspects of the cafés/restaurants history as a commerce and leisure establishment, and the changes in the sociability since the XIX century until the present time. The second chapter focuses about the Golden Gate: a) the ways of life of the dominant groups from Funchal in the XIX century, b) the transformations occurred during the XX century and c) the time until today.
