Em 2015, a poluição no rio Tejo agravou-se com as descargas de efluentes da indústria da celulose, levando as comunidades a mobilizarem-se contra a atividade destas empresas. Dessa maneira, é pertinente explorar como é que a comunidade de Mação perceciona e lida com a poluição no rio Tejo decorrente das descargas das fábricas da celulose. Este estudo teve como objetivos principais: analisar as perceções da comunidade sobre o modo como as descargas de efluentes das fábricas da celulose influenciam a atividade piscatória no Tejo; identificar as estratégias utilizadas pela comunidade piscatória para lidar com a poluição no Tejo; analisar o papel das organizações ambientalistas nas respostas comunitárias à poluição. Nesse sentido, foram realizadas 7 entrevistas semiestruturadas a pescadores da comunidade de Mação e a membros de associações ambientalistas. A análise temática permitiu identificar quatro temas principais: Visões e Perceções da Poluição do Tejo; Efeitos da Poluição no Tejo; Modos de Atuação Governamental e Institucional; Estratégias de Resiliência e Adaptação Comunitária. Este estudo, analisa as perceções dos participantes sobre o modo como a indústria da celulose causou alterações nas características do rio Tejo e como isso motivou a redução de fauna e, por consequência, afetou as comunidades piscatórias. A análise sugere que a comunidade tem procurado lidar com a poluição no rio Tejo, através de processos de resistência (e.g. manifestações) e desenvolvimento de estratégias adaptativas (e.g. pescar em locais menos poluídos), o que sugere algum nível de empoderamento e resiliência das comunidades.

Pollution on the Tagus river worsened in 2015 with the discharge of effluents from the pulp industry, leading communities to mobilize against the activity of these companies. Consequently, it makes sense to explore how the community of Mação perceives and deals with this river’s pollution due to discharges from the pulp mills. The main objectives of this study were: analysing the community's perception of how the effluent discharges from the pulp mills influence fishing activities in the Tagus; identifying the strategies used by the fishing community to deal with pollution in the Tagus; analysing the role of environmental organizations in community responses to pollution. Therefore, 7 semi-structured interviews were made with fishermen from the community of Mação and with members from environmental associations. The thematic analysis made it possible to identify four main themes: Visions and Perceptions of Tagus Pollution; Effects of Pollution on the Tagus; Forms of Government and Institutional Action; Community Resilience and Adaptation Strategies. This investigation analyses the participants' perceptions of how the pulp industry caused changes in the characteristics of the Tagus River and how it led to the reduction of the fauna and, consequently, affected fishing communities. It also suggests that the community has sought to deal with pollution on the Tagus River, by means of resistance processes (e.g. demonstrations) and development of adaptive strategies (e.g. fishing in less polluted places), which suggests some level of empowerment and resilience of the communities.
