A presente investigação pretende constituir um contributo para o estudo das relações entre a arquitetura, a memória e a identidade de um lugar. Num primeiro momento, o presente estudo procura sintetizar o trabalho realizado pelo grupo de investigação “Entre o Mar e a Terra”, debruçado sobre a análise das caraterísticas principais do território e da população da cidade da Costa de Caparica. Com este estudo, procurou-se conhecer, de forma profunda, o lugar a intervir, não só através da reflexão crítica, ao nível do ordenamento urbano da cidade, mas também através da identificação dos seus valores naturais, culturais e sociais, recorrendo ao desenho, à fotografia e ao contacto direto com as pessoas in loco. Partindo da análise crítica das ideias teorizadas por arquitetos como Aldo Rossi acerca do papel da memória na arquitetura, este estudo procura, num segundo momento, reafirmar a importância do lugar, compreendendo o modo como as circunstâncias geofísicas, os eventos e as pessoas influenciam a conceção arquitetónica. Complementada pelo estudo de referências, incluindo projetos de arquitetura, planos urbanos e intervenções costeiras, procuraram-se estabelecer paralelismos com o contexto geofísico da frente marítima da Costa de Caparica, a fim de se criar uma estratégia de intervenção enraizada na paisagem, na memória e na identidade do lugar. Através da análise atual desta cidade, verifica-se a pertinência da construção de continuidades entre as paisagens natural e construída, permitindo este estudo uma reflexão acerca da forma como olhamos e construímos os territórios e um alerta para a importância da identidade local neste processo.

This investigation aims to build a new contribution to the study of the relationships between architecture, memory and the identity of a place. In first, this study aims to sintethyse the research work developed by the investigation group “Between Sea and Cliff”, that focused on the analysis of Costa de Caparica city’s main characteristics regarding territory and population. With this study, the main purpose was to deeply know the place to intervene, not only through a critical reflexion, regarding the city’s urban organization, but also through the identification of its natural, cultural and social values, recurring to hand drawing, photography and direct contact with people in loco. Starting from the critical analysis of the ideias theorized by architects, like Aldo Rossi, regarding the role of memory in architecture, this study also aims to reaffirm the importance of the place, through the understanding of the way that geophysical circumstances, events and people influence architectural conception. Complemented by the study of references, such as architecture projects, urban plans and coastal interventions, this analysis aimed to establish parallelisms with the geophysical context of Costa de Caparica’s sea front, having the main purpose of creating an intervention strategy rooted in the landscape, the memory and the identity of the place. Through the current analysis of the city, we understand the importance of building continuities between the natural and the built landscapes, and we can reflect about the way we perceive and construct territories, besides drawing attention to the importance of local identity.
