Desde muito cedo, as crianças, cruzam-se com diversos mundos e vivências, sobre os quais operam e racionalizam. O mundo das pessoas mais velhas é um destes, sendo que, é desde a infância, que as crianças, como futuras adultas, começam a internalizar os processos de envelhecimento e a posicionarem-se sobre os mesmos. Perceber a forma como as crianças caraterizam o envelhecimento é crucial para que se possa, no futuro, erradicar estereótipos e preconceitos a ele associados. A literatura já começou a dar passos neste âmbito, no entanto, poucos são os estudos que põem em perspetiva o envelhecimento do ponto de vista da criança. Através de uma análise de conteúdo, procurou-se perceber que categorias são associadas ao envelhecimento, por parte das crianças e, identificar em que medida, certas caraterísticas da criança têm influência nestas perceções. Para isto, procedeu-se à análise de entrevistas realizadas junto de participantes do primeiro (n=38, Midade=6.57, DP=0.792) e do quarto ano de escolaridade (n=41, Midade=9.75, DP=0.767). Os resultados verificados através de uma análise de correspondência múltipla, revelaram que existem diferenças significativas entre os participantes, nomeadamente, os participantes do quarto ano, tendem a apresentar uma visão do envelhecimento mais complexa e ligada ao ciclo da vida, enquanto que os participantes do primeiro ano tendem a associar o envelhecimento a caraterísticas mais visíveis e, muitas vezes, estereotípicas. Revelaram ainda que, determinadas variáveis demográficas e de interação influenciavam esta visão. Propõe-se, que estudos futuros explorem o papel que estas variáveis têm no tipo de perceção que as crianças apresentam do envelhecimento.

From a very early age, children interact with different worlds and experiences, on which they operate. The world of older people is one of these, and it is from childhood that children, as future adults, begin to internalize the aging processes and take a stand on it. Understanding how children characterize aging is crucial so that, in the future, it is possible to eradicate stereotypes and prejudices associated with it. The literature has already started to take steps in this area, however, there are few studies that put aging in perspective from the child's point of view. Through a content analysis, we sought to understand which categories are associated with aging, on the part of children, and to identify to what extent certain characteristics of the child have an influence on these perceptions. For this, interviews were analyzed with participants from the first (n=38, Mage=6.57, SD=0.792) and fourth year (n=41, Mage=9.75, SD=0.767) grades of schooling. The results using a multiple component analyses procedure revealed that there were differences between the participants, namely, the fourth-year participants tended to have a deeper view of aging linked to the life cycle, while the first-year participants tended to associate aging with more visible and often stereotypical characteristics. They also revealed that certain demographic variables and factors related with their relation with grandparents influenced this view. It is proposed that future studies further explore the influence that these variables may have on children’s perceptions of aging.
