A partir da obra de Pedro Vieira de Almeida (1933-2011) a presente investigação desenvolve uma análise e reflexão estruturada nas áreas da Teoria, da Prática, da Crítica e da História, que se contaminam e que entreesclarecem o campo disciplinar da Arquitetura. A produção teórico-crítica de Pedro Vieira de Almeida inicia-se com o "Ensaio sobre o espaço da arquitetura" (1963), trabalho seminal que desenvolve em simultâneo com a atividade prática no atelier de Nuno Teotónio Pereira. A análise do espaço da arquitetura apresentada no "Ensaio" surge enquadrada no debate em torno da revisão do Movimento Moderno e na qual define os parâmetros que determinam a estrutura interpretativa de uma necessária Crítica da Arquitetura, compreendendo o modo recíproco de articulação entre o pensamento teórico e o projeto. A "história arquitetónica da arquitetura" define-se na interpretação dos objetos do passado através do pensamento teórico do presente, que permite instrumentalizar a História no pensamento e prática. A problemática da "tradição" no quadro da "modernidade" é transversal ao longo de todo o século XX. A reflexão arquitetónica do autor estabelece-se assim no plano teórico a partir da análise do espaço da arquitetura e no plano crítico na questão "modernidade e tradição". A Teoria, a Prática, a Crítica e a História definem-se como planos ordenadores desta análise, determinando a estrutura elementar na qual se estabelecem as relações e conexões das partes que constituem a obra de Pedro Vieira de Almeida, revelando os nexos que articulam a formulação teórica, a prática de projeto, a conceção crítica e a interpretação da história.

Following the work of Pedro Vieira de Almeida (1933-2011) the current research develops an analysis and reflection structured in the areas of Theory, Practice, Criticism and History, which affect and clarify among themselves the disciplinary field of Architecture. Pedro Vieira de Almeida's theoretical and critical production begins with the Essay about the Space of Architecture (1963), a seminal work that the author developed simultaneously with his practical activity in Nuno Teotónio Pereira's studio. The analysis of the space of architecture presented in the Essay is framed within the debate surrounding the revision of the Modern Movement and in which he defines the parameters that determine the interpretative structure of a necessary Criticism of Architecture, understanding the reciprocal mode of articulation between the theoretical thought and the project. The "architectural history of architecture" is defined in the interpretation of the objects of the past through the theoretical thought of the present, which allows for the instrumentalization of History in thought and practice. The problem of "tradition" within the context of "modernity" is transversal throughout the 20th century. The author's architectural reflection is thus established at the theoretical level from the analysis of the space of architecture and at the critical level on the issue of "modernity and tradition". The Theory, the Practice, the Criticism, and the History are defined as ruler plans of this analysis, determining the elementary structure in which are established the relationships and connections of the parts that forms the Pedro Vieira de Almeida's work, revealing the nexus that articulate the theoretical formulation, the project, the critical conception, and the interpretation of history.
