As feiras de arte são uma parte fundamental do mercado da arte, o seu impacto é impossível de ignorar e, no entanto, existe uma clara falta de informação em relação ao seu funcionamento e a sua influência em toda a indústria. Esta dissertação pretende aprofundar o contexto histórico e económico das feiras de arte, através de uma análise compreensiva do mercado e de algumas das feiras de arte contemporâneas mais importantes. Completada por uma visão do mercado de arte português atual, temos uma melhor perceção do enquadramento em que a ARCOlisboa se insere. Esta feira serve como caso de estudo de uma feira internacional de arte contemporânea, ao explorar os seus objetivos, desenvolvimento e estrutura, exemplifica o sistema de financiamento utilizado por muitas das principais feiras de arte atuais. Isto, em contraste com as feiras portuguesas e internacionais, permite uma análise da feira em comparação com outras semelhantes. E com uma visão mais aprofundada dos seus resultados nos últimos 3 anos, podemos reconhecer como o patrocínio empresarial e o apoio institucional têm contribuído para o sucesso da ARCO no contexto de um mercado incerto.

Art fairs are a key part of the art market, their impact is impossible to overlook, and yet there is a clear lack of information surrounding both how they function internally and how they influence the entire industry. This dissertation aims to expand on the historical and economic context of art fairs, through a comprehensive analysis of the market and some of the main contemporary art fairs. Completed by an overview of the Portuguese art market, we have a better understanding of the framework that ARCOlisboa is inserted in. This fair serves as a case study for an international contemporary art fair; by exploring its mission, development and structure, it exemplifies the financing system many of the main art fairs today use. This, in contrast with both Portuguese and international fairs, allows for an analysis of the fair in comparison to its peers. And with a with a more in-depth view of its results over the past 3 years, we are able to recognize how corporate sponsoring and institutional support have had a hand in ARCO’s success within the context of an uncertain market.
